Humming Noise

I own a 1999 Maxima SE and have recently noticed a frequent humming noise when I let off the brake pedal, and at times, when I make a turn as well. Any ideas what this could be? thanks

There is a problem with the emergency brake in the back (cable is too short if I remember right). There is a replacement kit available from the dealer that fixes the problem and it can be easily done while changing your rear rotors (or so I was told).

I have the same problem (if we are in fact talking about the same thing) where I get a humming/rubbing noise for a few seconds after releasing the brake or when making a turn. It is a benign problem, but if you want to get rid of the sound then the kit is fairly inexpensive.

If you talk to a knowledgable parts guy they should know what you are talking about... the one I did knew anyway.

I had this problem; go to the dealer and get those ebrake cables replaced. Otherwise the rear brakes will sieze up. :-\

I wouldn't go to the dealer... call and ask them how much they are gonna charge you and you will see what I mean.

Yep, the dealer mechanic told me I would have no problems handling it... but he also asked me what my experience was. If you know the guy does good work he should have no problem.

local mechanics may try to use non-oem parts...hence I go to the dealership and buy the parts and do the work myself.

i also thought that the humming also comes from the caliper sticking. a little grease on the springs would do the job..

grease on what springs? A documented problem on these cars is siezure of rear brakes due to the ebrake cables rusting. It has symptoms described exactly as he thread starter documented.
