IDEAL mileage from a full tank of gas?
i just went out and checked my new car now and its a little on top of the half way mark and i've gone 140 miles...i predict atleast 10-20 miles before halfway so i'm basically looking at a little over 300 miles a tank...is taht considered good?

id nut if i saw 300....havent seen it yet....granted i always fill up at quarter left, or slightly over, and have seen 240ish by then, but i have not seen the trip hit 300 yet....granted i gun it every 2 seconds, i think its decent

in city driving, I get 200-250 a tank.
on the highway, best i have done so far is 370 and I was nearly out of gas
i think i can hit 400 since a lot of the highway milage did include some traffic jams, with barely any movement.

Miles per tank hardly means anything because some people run the car down to fumes, gas light on for hours, and others fill it up when it gets near E.
MPG is more accurate, and that is highly variable too. In practice, 5-spds get much better mileage than the automatics, despite what the EPA claims.
I would say if you are getting above 20mpg, its pretty good. Some poeple will say, I get 32 mpg, but I think those are exceptions.

accurate way to measure and record miles per gallon (mpg):
1. Fill the car up to the very top.
2. Reset your trip odometer to keep record of how many miles you drove since you filled up.
3. drive a considerable amount, i'd say at least 1/2 or 3/4th of the tank... but you can even estimate this with a 1/4 tank.
4. go to gas station again
5. fill it up to the very top again.. but this time watch the pump and see how many gallons it just took.
6. Record that amount
7. Check your trip odometer for the amount of miles you drove on your previous tank of gas.
8. Divide that amount of miles by the amount of gallons it just took to fill up your car.
= MPG.
Otherwise, Eric is right...
you can estimate it roughly by how much you get to a full tank but it's not that accurate..
Did you notice how the 1st quater of the fuel gauge takes for ever to go down, then it gets faster and faster as it approaches the bottom of the fuel gauge, then the very last 1/4 seems to take a while as well...

two weeks ago, i got 405 miles until the gas light came on, first time ever having it come on so atleast i know it works. this past week i got around a lil over 360. if i ever got below 300 miles to a tank i'd be mad and think something was wrong.

This weekend on a trip to chicago I got over 450 miles to one tank. I was quite scared... being on the tollway you get worried... not many stops.

hmm my MPG is wierd...it can be anywhere from 250-350 depending on all hwy, mixed, or all city...all city can even be like under 250...and on the hwy if im steppin on it, it can be like 250 too...but if i cruise at a decent 65-80 mph range, i can get almost 400
however before in my dads 95 max, i drove down to north carolina from NYC three times...and i use to always get atleast 400 to even 450 miles per tank every time, but i wasnt a crazy speeder than...i used to jus go like 65-80 all the time...hardly ever really went that fast...i guess that has alot to do with it, how fast/hard u drive
but it still bugs me that my dads max always got WAYY better mileage on long trips before than mine ever does...im refering to both cars when they were stock

I drive like an idiot, ALL city driving, with a 137K mile engine throwing o2 sensor codes and other emissions and various sensor codes all over the place, and I geat 360miles to a tank easy. 400 with a little highway driving thrown in.

You guys are luckier than hell...
my engine isn't even over 100k yet, I do mainly city driving, but the in Dallas you have to use the highway to get anywhere, I have a lead foot and my average MPG is 21.4. I have a log of every time I put gas in the car because I rarely fill up. NYCe MaXiMa has a great idea and very accurate. I would recommend trying that.

And yeah...Here in Dallas you definitely have to take the highway to get anywhere. Unless you like going through 100+ lights just to get to another side of town.

This is kind of interesting, before modding my car I used to get 24-25mpg at 70mph constant speed on the highway. Now with all my mods crusing at 80+ mph on the highway I get 25-26mpg. Mods DO make the car more efficient in addition to giving it more power
I can get about 420-430 miles on a tank of gas on the highway with an average speed of 80mph.

113K no engine mods and I usually fill up at 400-420. I did go 500+ during a road trip once but that was a little scary. When my MAF sensor started faulting it would be more like 320-340.

I "was" getting about 230 miles for a full tank ~ 15MPG . Now that I changed my knock sensor last weekend, I'm still waiting for the ecu to adjust and I'll calculate it again. So far though, I just came back from Atlantic City and round trip was about 180 miles. I still have half a tank left so we'll see......

usually get around 320-370 with a mix of city and highway on my max
get around 240 with a mix on my pathfinder

I run Sunoco 94 and drive mostly highway at 65-75mph. I'm averaging around 24.5 mpg (with a 0304 ECU code). I plan to replace the KS as next weekends maxima project and hope to see some slight improvement after that.

One question, how many gallons of gas are left when the light comes on?

I can get 350 easy sometimes, but other times i can't even get 300..
then in regular city driving, i get 250 +/-
It has been the same case with my 98 auto as well..
I can only draw one conclusion,
The "city" driving in NYC is far worse than city driving in most of the country except for a few large cities like NYC but other than that, you can't call our "city" driving the same as the "city" driving in some suburban town. Our highway driving is probably worse than their city driving and has more traffic and requires more stop and go driving...
From who I've talked to locally, everyone gets similar milage.. so i wouldn't worry about it being something wrong with the car..

makes sense..
you remove the restrictive stock intake and exhaust, it should free up a lot of breathing for the car..
since it has more power, you don't need to push the gas as hard as you used to in order to get it to go as fast as before.. so if you keep you driving style and acceleration methods the same, your gas milage should improve because of mods..
i haven't been that fortunate because everytime i am entering the freeway i get the urge to downshift and listen to the roar of my frankencar..

Ideal mileage from a full tank of gas to me is 1,000 miles.
I calculate my mileage similar to NYCe MaXiMa's list. The things I do differently are:
I use the same gas station and the same pump.
I let the pump auto stop (sprayback on the nozzle) instead of pumping gas all the way to the filler neck.
With my bad alignment I was getting around 20-21.5mpg, mixed city/highway.
After my alignment was fixed I'm getting 24.5-25.5mpg.

that would make the calculation even more accurate

I get 500 miles from a tank with Highway driving, Four hundred and some around town. It runs real good. I think I just ended up with a good combo somehow
