My Car Is Dead

Last night while trying to jump my friends car my car died. Heres the story. Yesterday I had to jump two cars at least three to four times each. Then my friend called and told me that his just died, so Iwent up there and I moved into postion to where my battery would be closest to his, then I turned off my car and got the cables from the trunk. Then I tried to start me car and nothing, not one sound come from the engine bay. Now, I know its not the battery because my lights wouldnt work, and Iknow its not the alternator because then my car would atleasr turn over, but it doesnt do a dam thing. Im thinking it might be the starter, but im not sure, could all the jumps that I made worn something out. Please help, you guys have a good reputation about helping me out when I need it so please dont stop now.

Thanks
Brandon

The solinoid on your starter may have given up. Bang on it and try again. Sometimes thats just enough to make it work again. If the problem happens again, get a new starter.

I don't think the jumps had anything to do with it.

Your lights don't work either? Could be a grounding strap problem, which I seem to recall other people having. Use your jumper cables and run one lead from the negative battery terminal to the engine block and see if that helps. Also be sure your terminals are nice and clean and you've got good contact with the terminal lugs.

Another possibility is an internal short in your battery, in which case your friends just need to buy you a new one.

Re: My Car Is Dead

get a hammer and bang (not too hard) on the starter as you crank the car

Hey guys the banging thing probably won't work this time, Solenoids make a clicking sound if they are getting juice even if they aren't working right. If your lights aren't comming on, Your battery is toast or you have a bad connection. Your alternator could be bad but if it is it probalby just drainded your battery, also your alternator doesn't have much to do with turning your car over, even if it is bad and your battery has a charge the car will turn over or make a clicking noise.

Ok so your lights do work, Your starter is on the drivers side, right below the stock intake resonator.

This happened on mine as well. I just tapped the starter with a hammer (right under the stack air box) and it starteed right up, this is a common problem with our cars

Your "lights, and everything else that involves electrical stuff, etc" what? Do work, or do not work? There's no verb in that sentence.

yeah everything electrical works fine, and I did tap my starter and now everything is back to normal again. Thanks everyone that helped out with suggestions. Also does this mean anything like I need a new starter or is this just a common prob?

the starter is on the driver's side towards the back. It's underneath your intake and what not that is around in that area.

If tapping on the starter worked, then a couple of things [that I'm aware of] are possible. Either there was a questionable connection at the starter, or your starter has a "dead spot". If the problem is the later, then you'll likely be replacing it. I just replaced mine due to a remote starter malfunction which burned it out. Anyway, if need be, it's really a simple job. I spent more time trying to get a good price than it took to replace it. Note: If you end up shopping for one, learn the difference between a rebuilt and a remanufactured unit. The later is preferred.

Good Luck.

BTW...It's always when you don't need one immediately that you find a good deal...I just saw a BuyItNow deal on eBay for a brand new OEM starter for $139 - with 4 days to go. Acme is getting $180 for a reman. Nissan dealers are getting $250 for a reman.

So i said F#$K that and went on here.

Turns out that running to extra ground cables from your negative to a bolt on the tranny housing and a bolt on the starter works wonders. Try it out before spending hella money on stuff u don't need
I know you are new and all, but um first thing you want to do is check the dates on the threads before you bump them. I and welcome to the org.
