My CAI air filter is getting soaked! Problem?
Hello,
I have a question regarding my place racing CAI in
wet weather. The instructions say that the intake is only to be used in dry weather. I read all of the old posts regarding this problem
but I am still not convinced. The info I got from the other post
is the following:
1. I could install an AEX valve that would protect me if
The filter went under water.
2. A lot of people said don’t worry if it gets a little wet; there is only a problem if it is under water.
3. Other people said that there is not a lot of water that gets in there anyway.
4. I could also turn the CAI into a HAI.
I have a 98 GXE without fog lights. When I look through the fog light hole in my bumper, I can see my filter. This means that every time it rains my filter gets more than a little wet, it gets rained on and soaked. It is like spraying the filter directly with a garden hose.
My questions are:
Is there any way that water or mist could get sucked up into my
engine?
If so what happens to the engine, and how do I know when it happens?
Thanks a lot!

you really shouldnt have to worry about some water getting mixxed in there, if its just a small mist it will probably vaporize in the manifold before any serious damage could happen. You could install one of those bypass valves, but it really isnt necessary. If you're really concerned about it sucking in water, take the lower pipe off and just connect the filter to the midpipe

2. Yeah, I mean if it is submereged then you up the ante for trouble. Normal amounts of water from splashing should not really travel the whole way up the pipe.
3. They are correct due to the lenght and curvature of the pipe.
4. It would not be a bad idea if your really worried to ease your mind some.
5. Possibly but the past has proven this to be highly unlikely.
6. You will know because it will stop functioning. Dead engine.

Think of the little water that is going in as a ghetto water injection system to increase your horsepower
As long as you don't go thru a deep puddle, you should be ok. The warnings are their lawers talking, so if on that outside chance it does occur, you won't go running back to them whining
