Whirrring sound? Water pump?

I own a 95 GXE with 129K miles. About 2 months ago, I noticed a whirring sound that increases in pitch with RPM. It does it in park or drive which pretty much rules out the tranny. Constant pitch when cycling the A/C on and off too. Just a hunch that it's the water pump. Any other suggestions?

Anybody out there have a good source for water pump replacement procedures? Also, any suggestions on what brand pump to get would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Darby Mirocha

I haven't listened to it that closely, other than just raising
hood.

sounds like what i had, the noise was rather loud, and i originally thought it was belt or tensioner pulley related. here's what i did: pull off all the belts and start the car, if it is still there, there's a good chance your water pump is shot. if you are still skeptical, use a stethoscope. this will also tell you if it from bearings or not.

by the way......i was seriously thinking of it as DIY job but after talking to my mechanic I decided to let him tackle it, since I did not want to take any chances jumping the timing chain. If the chain jumps then you have to pull the heads to realign, and if you crank it with the chain improperly fitted, you can bend the valves since the VQ is a zero clearance engine.
