Muffler replacement questions

I need to replace my muffler so I have a couple questions.

First, Is the 2k+ Maxima muffler a direct bolt on to a 4th gen stock exhaust? Any pics of a 5th gen muffler on a 4th gen car?

OR, is there an aftermarket muffler that is a direct bolt on that someone would recommend?

Thanks.

I heard this actually inhibits performance.

Go w/ an aftermarket.

Actually, it does not inhibit performance, in fact, it's a little bit better (nothing too special). Do a search, there's tons of data on this. But I think the muffler is a direct bolt on.

That's what I need to be sure of. Anyone done this? I think I am going to either put in the 2k muffler (if it's bold on) or get an Apexi WS ( if I can find one).

Actually, the 5th gen muffler is not a direct bolt on for 4th gens. The intake pipe is shaped differently and longer. It'll require a little cutting and welding work.

At least that's what I hear..

You are correct. When I had mine installed I had a new flange put on because they did not match up right and some other minor tinkering. Takes a shop maybe 35 minutes or so to do it.

Thanks guys. Sudz - do you have a pic of your exhaust? Did you leave the chrome tailpiece on? I'm curious how it looks.

Thanks.

I dont have a pic right now but tonight I can post one for you. I am at work until 8 and then when I get home I will see if I can put one up later on if I can get a good pic in the dark. Mine is off a 2002 SE so I dont have the oval chrome thing on it but rather the two tips coming out individualy with the chrome looking stuff wrapped around it. It looks nice though and I like it.

No one sells a Apexi WS muffler only, at least not that I have ever found.
A 5th gen muffler in no way hurts performance, some see modest gains. Others like BEJAY1 saw a 9hp increase on a dyno.
Like stated befoe, a 5th gen muffler does not bolt up, but can be easily modified by a shop to do so.
