i heard that the speedometers are actually tell you are going slower... it was like by 7% or something... it was suppose to prevent Nissan from getting lawsuits against ppl who claimed their speedometers were jacked up or something. I heard this once... so don't flame me if i'm wrong.

Ususally its the other way around. There was a recent (within the last few months) study done by some car magazine about the accuracy of speedomenters. It was found at highway speeds, the average stock speedometer read a few miles/hr higher than the car was actually going. BMW was the worst with something like 7 to 8 mph higher. I believe the car manufacturers do this to make you think you're going faster than you actually are. I don't know if they do this to make you think their car is better or to keep you from speeding.

They do this to keep from getting sued for speeding tickets.

If the speedo says 65 and the car is really doing 70, the automaker could be liable for speeding tickets...

They'd rather be safe than sorry.

er sorry, i meant faster but yeah, that's what my cousin told me (original owner) when he said he has pushed the car to 135mph before but wasn't sure if it was the real speed.

I pushed my old 90 Sentra to 115 before (4-speed, 1.6L, POS, but I gotta say, that engine is freakin' bulletproof, go Nissan), but I'm sure at 50 mph, its really only going 45. Those mobile radar boxes that tell you how fast your going that the police put out always read below what my speedometer said by about 5 mph.

Considering the top speed of a stock gen4 SE 5-speed is ~142mph... I would hope it'd be higher. 150mph out of a modded NA gen4 5-speed shouldn't be hard... but beyond that requires serious power.

That said, I've done enough top speed runs. I'm no longer as excited about them as I used to be. (sticking it out at redline in our Audi A4 1.9TDI Avant on the autobahn at 210km/h... )

I GPS'd my max a while back and 143 on the GPS is about 146 on the speedo....speedos aren't that far off (unless you drive a bimmer)

I'm going to do it again with my VI...should be well over 150

i hit (guessing) 145mph coming back from Rockingham last friday. the needle was considerably past the 140mph mark... plus, with my 225-55-16's, i've noticed the other day that my 80mph is about 2-3mph faster than others with stock tires, so its kinda hard to say how fast i was actually going. i could have kept climbing... but i got scared. stock suspension wasn't designed to take bumps @ that speed.

I feel you about the time it might take to get to 140 if you don't know about the overdrive trick, but i'm an auto with no work done on my tranny and i haven't hit 140, but as i stated earlier, 125 is no amazing feet. Auto's can go pretty fast with the overdrive off before you have to turn the overdrive on. As long as you don't go past the point in which the max stops pulling rpm wise which is around 5000-5500 pms depending upon your Max. I have a y pipe and a hybrid intake....Oh yeah, i have a stock exhaust set up for the time being.

ive got nothing to prove it

but i did go slightly past 140 mark in my stock auto 1996 on flat freeway

the fact that i was cruisin at like 90 and then decided to go for it, and knew the o/d trick helped id guess

Given fair testing conditions, bone-stock 5-speeds can reach ~140 mph. I still firmly stand behind my opinion that no bone-stock autos can reach the same speed given the same fair testing conditions.

For comparision reasons, dare I say, a stock 5-speed Acura Integra Type-R (no flames please ) which is a freeway monster (ever see their power curve?) can reach ~145mph. I really doubt a bone-stock auto max can reach a few mph less than that with it's gearing.

However, to anyone who actually did reach 140mph with a bone-stock auto, you have some car, congrats.

i agree with Calsonic. There is no way a STOCK auto Max can hit 145mph without "cheats"

cheats in this case= drafting, tailwind, downhill, inaccurate speedo, wrong size tires.

I can't believe that either. I've only hit about 140 in my car and it's got a blower and even then at 140 or so, the car's not pulling that hard. Before the blower, the car only did a little over 130 on the speedo, but even that took a lot of road. His speedo must be way, way off. A 4th gen auto doesn't really have the power to do 145 bone stock with the gearing.

142 on hybrid intake and 18 in tire, but there was very little left. Just got my y-pipe, dunno how much faster.

No way in hell 145 in an stock auto. I'm a 5 spd and I could barely get pass 135 stock.

idiots

All those people who say you can't do 140 in a bone stock auto are idiots. Seriously I have absolutely no reason to lie about having done it myself. My car was total stock including rims/tires, and i did it. I didn't turn my o/d off and then back on either. I had o/d ON (light off) all the way up to 137 and the car would not pull any more. So i hit the switch (light on) and within about 10 seconds the car crawled to 141. I could care less if you believe it or not. But i'll tell you what, i have a few lil mods now nothing big, and if you want proof that an auto can get up there get in the passengers seat and buckle up.

P.S. People on this forum swear they know everything about other peoples cars and automatically ( no pun intended) accuse people of lieing. Unless you're 16 with an inadequate ***** size, i don't think theres any reason to lie about how fast your stock max is. Especially since EVERYONE here (almost) drives one. Its not like your bragin after beating a mustang, here your just talkin to fellow enthusiests (pardon my terrible spelling, i'm an engineer not an english major).

Re: idiots

All I want to know is how you turned O/D off at 137 when 3rd gear is only good to like 125. So you were 12 mph over the top speed of 3rd gear when you basically downshifted back into 3rd and the car kept pulling? How is that possible?

Ok well I know I am not a 4th gen but I buried my needle a few weeks ago No BS! Used to max out at around 140 but now go past the 145 range and bury the needle since my ACT hdr6 and AASCO 11 Lbs flywheel install with already having the JWT ECU.

4th gen automatic cars will run 3rd gear (drive) up to around 120mph, so they will get up to that speed fairly quickly... but once they shift into overdrive, the speed doesn't pick up nearly as fast.

If you want to go much higher than 120mph in an automatic Max, (on flat ground) you'd better have plenty of room.

Good Luck, and be safe!

Notice I do not have an Automagic as we call them! I have a VE30DE equipped 5-speed with ACT 6puck disc, Heavy Duty Pressure Plate, AAsco 11 lbs flywheel, JWT ECU w/ n20 daughterboard, etc.

I'm wondering the same thing. Maybe he got it the other way around? OD off up until 137 then OD on?

well, I was saying that its not possible for a STOCK auto Max to hit 140 or 145 mph with no "cheats"
im not sure i understand your OD button thing, with OD off, 3rd gear is good till about 125mph. Once you go into 4th, its geared for economy, it barely pulls in 4th.
