Found the top speed on my Max

Stock except for the Place Racing cold air and weighing in at 3155 with me (coming home from the track), windows up.

133 MPH and it ran out of horsepower.

Just thought I would let everyone know

I have hit the 140 mark on the speedo but that isn't really 140. Still haven't had time to test it on the RSM to see what the real top speed is.

To really get to the upper 130's, lower 140's stock, all you need to do is push your car as hard as it will go with the overdrive off (5000-5500 RPM's), then pop the overdirive on and you should get to that top speed a lot faster. Maybe your top speed will be higher as well, but i've gotten to the 120's pretty easy after learning this trick from Nightrider.

hmm.. strangly, mine only goes up to 120... '98auto, stk air/muffler.. it just stayed @ 120 and won't go up.. i didn't turn OD off, just step on the gas and it wouldn't go higher... and mine has no limiter too... hmm... strange...

this strikes me as odd...

you guys saying that the car runs out of power at 120-130. i have a fairly long/straight stretch of backroad that i do my launches and high speed runs on...and with just the intake the car would pull to 135 pretty effortlessly then i would run out of road. with the addition of the Y-pipe and suspension it pulls right to 140 with little effort once again running out of road. at 140 if anything it is close to running out of rpm's and not horsepower. it is close to 5800-5900rpm approx at 140 (5spd)

others have been wondering about my car at the track thinking it may be a factory freak...but i dont think so if you just keep pushing it.

just thought i would share...not flaming, just sharing my experiences.

140+

Ive gotten the speedo to read past 140, but I didnt have a camera
Well, I got a pic at around 130 something, check the sig.
If you think the sig is BS well then:

Anyway, its hard to hold a camera still @ 2:30AM while drive 130+ on I25 in NEW MEXICO! These drivers suck so bad.

Welll....mine still has the limiter at 115. I did get it up that high but damn.....the thing feels so totally unsafe to drive at that speed. Seems fine up to about 100 and then it just doesn't seem right :P

I hit 130 and it was still going strong but scared of cops and the the road was starting to turn. it takes a couple of seconds to get it up there so I need a longer straightaway.

Anyone checked the speedo with a GPS? Just wondering how far off it is (b/c I guarantee its off at least a little bit at those speeds).

Had my 99 SE 5 speed's guage buried at 140. But then again on my motorcycle 175 on speedo is only 165 GPS.....

Ummm... Somebody needs to be careful here. That car could be dangerous if the front end fell off the jack stands with the tires spinning at that speed!

I did 141 with when my max was stock, i weigh 180 and i had 2 12" subs + box + 2 amps radio was on too. All i did was push it with od on then when i hit about 137 it stoped so i flicked o/d off and it jumped to 141 before settling again. It did take forever to get up there. i was on the Jersey turnpike on X-max eve on my way home when i did it. This was after already driving close to 1000 miles coming up from florida. My car loves to go fast, at 100+ i get better gas mileage than i do around town. Now i have an intake, no cat, and an exhaust i can probably push 145-150 mph. Turbo or nos coming in jan 03.

Why do you have a speed limiter bypass if you have an SE? The 95 SE's have speen limiters?

A stock 5-speed 4th gen should be able to touch 140mph. Motor Trend and C&D both got 140+mph topspeeds out of the 95 5 speed SE.

No offence in anyway, but a 14.6@96mph isn't "freakish" in terms of 4th gen performance. The trap speed is definately good, but there are guys in here that have run 14.2-14.4@96mph with just i/y-pipe.

Motor Trend got 142.1 on radar out of a 95 5spd SE in their 1995 Top Speed Shootout. This BTW was higher than the 95 Cobra and 95 Mustang GT, until they put DUCT TAPE all over the front ends of the Stangs inorder to make them more aerodynamic.

BTW my top speed so far GPS VERIFIED is 145mph with 6% smaller tires than stock (235-40-17). This was 6500RPM in 5th gear with the VI. With stock sized tires 150 won't be a problem I'll GPS it this winter when I have my stockers on.

To those stock AUTO 4th gens who said they reached 140mph, I say BS unless you had access to a 5 mile empty stretch of downward sloping freeway & a tailwind. It takes a well-modded auto 4th gen to reach 140mph. The auto gearing is simply not up to the task.

BS!!! You said you turned O/D off when you hit 137 and turned it on again at 141mph, ummm, but 3rd gear only goes up to about 126mph or so. How in the world you were going 137-141mph in 3rd gear blows my mind. Get your facts straight, noob.
