hi guys
I'm goin nuts now, a couple days ago this annoying vibrating sound is coming from the shifter. It's most notiicable and "long lasting" when i'm in 5th gear on the highway. It's starting to **** me off. I'm wondering though if this could be related to the whining sound (prolly differential bearing f-ed up)... but then again i've had that problem for a month now and it didn't happen... unless it gets progressively worst and causes the vibrating sound now. I do remembre tho opening up that panel last weekend to run a wire underneath, perhaps i did something wrong there?
I'm not sure if this is also related, but when it's in gear, how much play should i feel? When i move the shifter when it's in gear, it goes about half an inch or more side to side. This normal?
God i'm starting to hate the whole tranny system in my max, thanks for any help guys.

i forgot to mention that i have a STS and a Momo shiftknob too... but the thing is, it didn't happen before... for like a year or 2.
On the Momo, there is the rubber adaptor that the shifter threaded portion should fit into. If that part isn't in the rubber adaptor, it will vibrate. I haven't been able to get that rubber piece out again and it seems "too small" for the threaded portion...
I'm not sure if that is your problem. If the noise just started after removing/reinstalling the shift ****, that may be it.

I think it's signs of my tranny dying

No this is not normal. My 95 Maxima SE doesn't move even an 1/8th of an inch. Its rock solid. My 91 SE-R on the other hand moves 3-4 inch's. For me its the tranny.when it's in gear, how much play should i feel? When i move the shifter when it's in gear, it goes about half an inch or more side to side. This normal?
Take a look at the linkage under the car and make sure the bushings are all intacted and bolted down.

My shifter didnt move much before, but when i installed the short shift kit i streached the spring that holds the bottom of the shaft and its been loose ever since... So that might be a problem in your case, perhaps your spring has just had its toll and needs to be replaced..

hmmm well for me there'd be no retracing because i had this professionally installed. I will go home after work and take off that panel surrounding the shifter and look at it.Originally posted by blizz20oma

Now, i just realized perhaps the wire i put in there is somehow touching the shifter rod and is making that sound.
The STS will cause more vibration thru the shifter because the STS uses a much harder internal bushing and doesn't use the rubber O-ring bushings around the edges of the internal bushing. Pacesetter does all of this to increase the "feel".
Mine vibrates too. You don't notice it much in warm weather, but when it gets cold outside the rubber mounts on the engine and shifter support get hard and amplify vibrations. Any aftermarket Y-pipe will cause slightly more vibration thru the floor board, gas pedal, and even the shifter. It all adds up.
