I've replaced my brakes 5 times and all of them had the holes in them, i belive the springs are to help seperate the brakes when the are not pressed. I wouldnt imagine the aren't crucial but they probably prolong brake life.

I've installed aftermarket pads (KVR) that did not comes with holes for the springs to seat. It's not causing any noise that I can hear of.

Nissan Pads no longer come with the holes for the metal wire clips. There should have been a note along with your pads, if they were OEM, that told you about that change.

You may experience a little noise and reduced mileage from dragging. The way I drive, mileage is not a concern. The Proterfields I have didn't have the holes, so I drilled some.

I believe that the '98 & '99 have a different design to keep the pads off of the rotors. I have been told that you use the later 4th gen brake hardware kits on the earlier calipers, but I haven't tried it.

Did you paint the hats yourself? If so, what prepping did you do? I have a couple rear rotors whose hats I want to paint.

It seems nissan is becoming very cheap these days, they even reduced the number of wear indicators to only one pad. the holes on the pad are for the anti-rattle clips, they just try to keep the pads stationary when no pressure is applied. me personally, i wouldn't worry too much about the longevity of the pads without the anti-rattle clips. relatively speaking these pads are pretty hard and w/o pressure being applied there should be a negligible amount of wear, i mean take into consideration these things are designed to stop a 3000 lb vehicle from any speed. only thing different is you may get some rattling, i'm assuming this isn't major since nissan omitted the anti-rattle holes.

hope that answers some of your questions.

i painted them because these were not cad plated so i was afraid of rusting to the hats.. i just sanded it a little bit and covered up the places i did not want paint to get on and used a high heat paint.. next i have to do the calipers.. i did not have enough time to do it today..

New Porterfield pads (I order about 2 weeks ago) now have the holes in the backing for the anti-rattle springs. My previous set (about a year ago) didn't have the holes.

I've owned both a 97 and a 99 and can tell no difference between any of the brake hardware. Same clips, same shims, and same anti-rattle springs.

Maybe they made a change in 97 so 95-96's are different.
