knock knock knockin on 13's door

analyze my slips. i ran at atco today (11/24). i ended up losing the 1st round. i'd like to say i lost it on purpose (dialed in 14.2)lol. staying a whole day at the track is a waste! plus i only got 3 runs. here they go in order.
1st run: RT .630; 60' 2.152; 330' 5.971; 1/8 9.110@78.36mph; 990' 11.736; 1/4mi 14.116@ 97.13mph
2nd run: RT .6.38; 60' 2.291; 330' 6.148; 1/8 9.300@78.02mph; 990' 11.930 1/4mi 14.317@ 96.99mph
3rd run: dial 14.20 RT .596; 60' 2.122; 330' 5.938 1/8 9.071@78.25mph; 990' 11.702 1/4mi 14.111 @93.09mph
my first two runs were clean runs. on my last run i hit a fuel cutoff at the end of my run probably because i was running very low on fuel. this has happened to me before and as a result my mph was only 93mph. i can imagine by looking at the slip i could have had at least a 14.0 run or close to a 13.999 run! my new personal record is a flawed run lol. well anyway, i'm pretty pleased at my runs today despite breaking out. i sorta knew i was gonna break out. i had that feeling. but i wanted to leave because i had plans later in the evening. i should have added a few more gals to the tank before i raced. i was so close to 13's on street tires today!

What crappy luck you have. You had a 14.0 for sure on that last run. How much longer is your track open for before they close for winter. You are just a hair away from 13s on street tires with no VI.

Wow!! You're making a lot of us jealous including myself and about nearly every 2k2 owner on the board. Good job.

Can you give me a run down on your launch technique? How about shifting technique? Do you powershift? I've pulled low 2.2 60 foots and have run tons of 9.4@76-77mph 1/8s and 96-97mph 1/4 trap speeds yet I'm nowhere close to 14.3s. I just don't get it. Maybe it's my track

Dave
my driver setup and launch technique are posted on the 1/4mi forum. but in a nutshell i stage my car holding it at 1,500rpms. on the third yellow i drop the hammer, get a tiny bit of wheelhop and/or wheelspin. i redline first and second gear, shift at an indicated 6,400rpm into third. finally i shift into fourth after the tach hits 6,200rpm. every shift is lift throttle, but done in the most efficient manner as possible. you gotta be a "kung fu shifter" as someone described me lol. hope this helps!

I have a 98 SE 5 Speed with Frankencar with Apexi filter. I ran a 15.449 at the track yesterday. I want to get my car to run 14.5. What other mods would I need to achieve this?

With a proper launch you could be hitting high 14's - low 15's stock. I'd say with a nice y-pipe, catback and traction you'd be in the 14's easily. With a VI you'd be hitting that 14.5 no doubt.

you can run 14.6 with just practice. lower your tire pressures. get rid of some excess weight in the car. depending on track temp. work on the launch and your shifting and you'll go far with just that. the ypipe makes a world of difference. i first got consistent 14.5's with the ypipe and filter combo. with even more practice you can get that down to 14.3 and good conditions.

I was redlining the first three gears. I would finish the 1/4 at almost redline of 3rd. Should I have swtiched at 1-2 @6500, 2-3 @6200, 3-4 @6000? Would switching at these shift point brought down my 1/4 time and by how much? I was churping/spinning on 1-2 shift. Also my tire pressure was at 22psi hot inthe front and 29psi in the back.

dwapen: i just got the alternator replaced at the dealer under the recall on friday before this race. good thing the people at nissan didn't question my pulley (or my ypipe, testpipe and ecu) lol. they even gave me new belts. the funny thing is this alternator is noisier than the sick one it replaces! hehe oh well, it was free. at least my lights don't dim. also i found out my idle was low because i had forgotten to turn my ECU screw fully counterclockwise in my haste one day last week (duh). after a few searches i found an answer! looks like search actually payed off this time lol. neal: i think atco only takes a break for one month in december. there's a small chance i'll make it back for one test and tune to settle my flawed runs and finally run 13's! but, it's getting colder and i don't know how my launches will fair; plus i have a full tank now. i'm pretty satisfied as is.

I'm in the same boat as you. My first time at the track was a little embaressing, it seems to just be practice, practice, practice.

dude, my car is stock and I'm running 15.2's. you probably just need to practice your launch and get those shifts nice and quick.

I have about 10-15% tread left on my tires, and I would spin on my 2-3 shifts which brought down my time. I also will need to shift sooner in 2nd and 3rd.

shift into second at redline. before my ECU i shifted into 3rd at an indicated 6,200 otherwise i'd hit the limiter before the line. with the ECU i have no choice but to shift into fourth otherwise i'd hit the limiter well before the finish.

arnaud, yup. they're nice rims. they work 100% good. when i first saw your car i had just started modding mine. i was thinking "wow, i have a long way to go." your car looked sweet. well, my car still looks stock, but it's a whole lot faster than before lol. how are you and your newer SE doing? got boost yet?

hehe, i yearn for boost, come May/June you can stop by and help me install the damn thing with Jay(thebigsadler)...Mmmm turbo...(i easily convinced my parents by telling them this was a cheaper way of changing my car completely rather than buying a faster car with higher insurance.)

yup. now that i'm working i thought to myself. i wanted a FAST car. i figured the max wasn't gonna cut it. i need it more for daily duty. my S13 swap will cost a bit, but in the long run it'll pay off when i run insane times and smoke vettes. wishfully thinking. but it's gonna be done soon. i'll let you know how it goes. i want to race synki and his 12 second WRX lol.
