Hood mod

Before any annoyingly rambunctious moderators rub it in my face to do a search first, I already did multiple searches before I posted. My question is that I was wondering if it were possible to have the hood open towards the front of the car?

Yes, I've seen a blue Maxima with the hood hinged in front; but I couldn't tell you where to get more info on how to do it.

Are you referring to the Max in the Fast & Furious?
Well it's very expensive and I don't think it's worth the money.

Yeah. I think for the purpose of accessing the engine, I would much prefer a rear-hinged hood.

Re: Re: Re: Hood mod

I doubt it's that expensive. You just need to know how to weld. When the hood is closed, it's held by hoodpins only. It won't cost more than $150 in parts to rig it up. The hard part would be installing new hood struts to support the hood. I guess if you have to pay someone then it could get expensive.

You don't know Jesse James by chance, do you? If he can make a school bus float, I'm sure he could make your hood for you...

hood pistons/struts???

Hi there... quick question.. the hood on my 97 maxima GLE won't stay up. i'm guessing the hood pistons are screwed up. how much does it cost to replace? any ideas or suggestions? should i just use a broom handle to hold upthe hood?

thanks!

Re: hood pistons/struts???

get them replaced, very easy and shouldn't cost you more than $50 ... i'd rather spend $50 than have the chance of a 50lb metal hood fall on my head

Try checking out a junkyard or salvage yard. Picked up a set of rear hatch struts for my hatchback for $10. Much better than using a piece of 2x4 (didn't trust the broomstick) to hold up the hatch, and you don't have to worry about the thing slipping and closing on the back of your neck or head.

Aloha,

Actually, I got an estimate at a Nissan dealer where I got my oil changed. They'll replace them for $295!!

I'll have to find another option. Junkyard sounds like a good idea right now.

It should be no more than $600 all said and done for a good job. And yes Autoloc should have what you're looking for. Just a head up, it makes working on the engine a LOT harder on certain things (and makes nothing easier).

I wonder what the dealership did to make it stay up when they changed the oil...

Piston Woes

I have the same problem with my hood. Had it fall on my head, not exactly the best feeling in the world. The reason behind it is that over time it loose gas in the pistons. Easiest cheepest way, is get a 1.5 foot 2x4 . Any junkyard can hook ya up with some used ones, or even new ones aren't that expensive i hear

I was quoted $450 for completely new latch/popper for the reverse mount, with hinges to come up nice and smooth and hood struts.. it's a complete custom job, and it will make accessing stuff harder, but no maxima's besides Craig Liberman's have this mod (maybe one or 2)

just use a Club or other steering wheel anti-theft device. The fork in the Club fits nicely on the underside of the hood, and it's adjustable too. Good thing is that it protects your car when you close up your hood for the night.

what if you had "removable" hinges that would allow you to take the entire hood off for "major" engine work. i've though about this too. i could "ghetto" mod it for fairly cheap using the parts from around my friend's shop
