Sprint,

One more question, I took the MAX in for the alternator replacement under the recall and the dealer did a 27 point inspection. They said my tranny fluid needed to be changed, should I have them change it for $85? I'm having them change the OPS.

The wanted
$135 Accessory Belts
$95 Flush and Fill
$300 Fuel System Cleanout

I would assume auto. Manual tranny's don't require flushing.

Jiggs -

You could do the belts yourself for about $25 in parts if you're willing to, and I doubt that the fuel system cleaning will help, and I'm sure its not worth $300.

belts are a b!tch.. but they are dooable..
tranny.. flush and fill is easy.. depending on what tranny you got.. you can find the instructions around here..
fuel system cleanout is i spoke to a service tech.. he said the fuel cleaner you buy at the gas station is just as effective as the one they do there...

if you havn't done plugs before.. check my site

Goto www.motorvate.ca and follow the links for Throttle Body cleaning. This is really easy to do. After you complete that, dump a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner in your next full up.

Total cost for your fuel system clean out ~$25 bucks.

This dealer does mechanical work excellent work , but they are notorious for how expensive they are. Dealers basically play upon peoples intelligence. Thanks for the help, and good information.

I'm still unsure of which plugs I should buy , because the opinions vary so much. I'll probably get the NGK Platinums.

Thanks for the link, but i followed the links to the throttle body and didn't find anything about the fuel system clean. Do you mean i need to just clean the throttle body and thats the same thing? and then add the techron stuff?...

Don't do it! They wanted like $18 each when I checked. Talk to Matt or Jason at tustinnissanparts.com ask for the maxima.org discount and the oem plats are like $8 each, and no tax unless you live in CA. They will charge like $6 shipping.

Those are for platinums, he's talking about coppers.

I get mine from advance auto parts. If they can't reference the plug part number, ask if they have NKG plugs for a 97 (I'd assume 95-99 are the same though) Altima. They are the stock plugs for it and many other Nissans. I think they charge around $1.50 or $1.99 per plug.

Funny, I also have a 97 SE and took it in for the alternator replacement and got the same line on belts and flush and fill. That must be their standard response to everyone going in for the recall!!

Makes sense. Its a good way for them to recover some of their losses with the recall. I'm sure many people fall for it.
