Ignition Coil Problems

I know many of the 1999 Maxima's have bad ignition coils. I have already had one replaced by a non-Nissan service center. I now have a another service engine soon light and it seems I have another bad coil. I've heard the 2000 Maxima's are getting new coils under warranty. Since the ignition coil parts are the same, has any one with a 1999 or older had any success with Nissan paying for new coils? My SE only has 45k miles. Coils should last much longer then that.
Thanks for any information.

Coils should be covered under the 52k powertrain warranty.

The dealer states the coils are under the 3 year 36k mile warranty. They have never heard the coils go this early (they must always say that).

Read the warranty (it's in your owner's manual), don't let the dealer tell you what is and isn't covered.

I don't have mine handy, so I'm not sure where the coils fall, but I would guess powertain.

Ignition coil pack is covered under basic 3/36 warranty.

Currently at 52k, with an unknown faulty coil pack because my DTC code only comes up 0201 without the corresponding cylinder misfire DTC value.

Also, finding coil packs right now is a challenge. Most dealers I have spoken to say they are on national backorder and most local parts places have a handful in far away warehouses in other states.

My one front band coil gets here tomorrow, so I will start replacing each coil until the light disappears.....

I went through http://www.nissan-auto-parts-dealer.com/ to get my coil pack, cheaper than anywhere else. They sell two different manufacturers, they said the cheaper coil pack was on back order so I paid a couple bucks more and didnt have to wait, this was about a month ago. I paid $65 shipped while my local dealer wanted $86 (and didnt have it in stock)

Loss of power, bad idle, rough driving, worse gas mileage.

99 Maximas use the Hanashi OEM coil packs, so hopefully that's the one you get. The Mitsubishi ones looked quite different from the Hanashi-made ones. Whether the Mitsubishi ones are for the 5th gens or some other year 4th gens I haven't a clue.

Mine was $73.99 from a Napa store......but $83 or so after tax. I went this route in case I had to return it as I don't know which cylinder/coil is "bad". So I ordered the front (right bank) pack and am crossing my fingers.

Thanks for the reply. Appears to be a pattern emerging on this issue. As someone suggested earlier, perhaps it's time to bring this to the attention of Nissan. [/B][/QUOTE]

Pls see the engine "HICCUP" topic in last few days back. All of us has same probles.

I spoke with Nissan Customer Affair dept today. They seem to be not aware of this problem. They asked me to go the Nissan dealer and find out the problems and paid by my own expense and report to them. The lady I spoke said that due to my warranty are exprire, they can not help us. Only she would forward to their Engineering dept my finding and let me know what to fix. But, I think it is major flaw from their design and defects and they should take responsibility.

Pls contact 800-647-7261 X 3830 at North America Nissan USA customer affair and explain your problems. I think all Max lovers should express our concerns on this engine "hiccup" and vibrate engine (IDLE). Nissan North America USA direct line is 310-771-3111 and ask for customer affair dept or higher cheese at Nissan. Keep our finger cross. Thks.

1999 Maxima GXE Coil problem

I have 39600 miles on my 99 Maxima. I started getting "Service Engine Soon" light recently and took it to the local dealer in Colorado Springs. He said it would cost me $625+tax to replace all 6 coils. He said that he would not charge me for labor but only for parts. But I see that the same parts could be had for around $360 on the internet. I called Nissan Customer service and the lady agreed to reimburse me at least 30% of the total charges. I asked for more. She said she would consider it and asked me to fax my receipt from the local dealer. I am planning on faxing my receipt on Monday, January 13th.

May be if we all shout loud enough about this glaring problem Nissan will reimburse us 100% for the bad coils. I do not expect the coils to fail before 40K miles.

By the way I had purchased top-of-the-line ( Diamond Plan )extended Warranty with $0 deductible from Warranty Gold. They refused to pay for the replacement of the coils. I immediately asked them to cancel my warranty contract and wanted a full refund. They have agreed to do so. I am yet to see the money charged to my credit card. Hopefully it will happen tomorrow.

Lousy coils! Lousy warranty companies! Maxima is a great car but for the problems with the coils, alternator and pump.
