New to group. Two questions. 1. Should metal PCV value that came with car click when shook? 2. Cold start problem. With new plugs and fuel filter car still stalls only at cold start. Giving gas at same time key is turned prevents stall. What part needs replacement. Thanks.

a PCV valve should rattle when you shake it....if it stops rattling, that means its plugged up and needs to be replaced.

diagnosing your starting problem will take more info than what you have told us. First, clean out your throttle body...you'll gets lots of results if you do a search for "throttle body clean*" in the 4th gen section.

if you have Bosch or any other plug than an NGK, that could be the problem....it sounds crazy but trust us.

If that doesn't help, trying turning the ignition on for a few seconds before trying to start it. if that improves your starts it may imply a leaking fuel pump check valve. if you still have to open the throttle it may be a leaky injector (or multiple injectors or dirty injectors....a quality fuel injector cleaner may help).

Yeah, I agree with jbreit, the description your giving for number 2 sounds very much like a dirty throttle body. I had the exact same symptoms when starting up the car. Cleaned the TB out and problem solved I'd definately start there first. It's not hard.

I've heard leaky or dirty injectors shouldn't be an issue for the VQ becuase of their pintleless design.

Note: After much research I found out that a "pintle" is simply a cone in a hole type valve with the cone pointing in the direction of flow. This is what VQ injectors do not have. If anyone knows their actual design, I would really like to know.

I cleaned out my PCV - just spray with some WD40 and make sure it works freely but springs correctly. As for the cold stalling...I had the same problem last winter, I cleaned out the throttle body and the problem instantly went away.

best of luck!
