Best inexpensive shocks/struts w/ stock springs?

Well my 7 year old struts are leaking and at 120K miles probbaly time to change the OEMs. Not sure I weant to change my springs (they don't wear out do they?) But I want some newe shocks/struts. If I keep the same springs I doubt I'll need the high perf ones most of you guys opt for. I just want at least as good as it was when new or a little better. Any opinions you can lend me?

I'd wager that the KYB GR-2s would be a good choice with stock springs.

Sounds like it will run $300 or so not matter what I do, huh? What about basic struts/shocks like Monroe brand or are they crap?

I think the KYB GR-2 would be about the same price as a Monroe or something. Tire Rack has the GR-2 for $72/each front and $58/each rear.

I see the Maxspeed springs are really cheap right now on the group deal. How do they ride compared to stock? Any info on spring rates? It looks like the rears are a progressive rate unit.

Any testimonials here? Are they going to rattle my fillings out on bumpy roads?

Thanks!

no doubt that KYB GR2s will be the best with stock and for the money they are cheap.

What's the fastest anyone's had the stock struts go out? I'm only at 50k and I'm looking for justification to change. May take a while though.

Looks like Tire rack may be my best bet. Just called Tires plus and for Monroe shocks/struts installed was $950 incl alignment. They will NOT install suspension bought elsewhere. Any instruction for install of shocks/struts/springs? I refuse to pay $600 for installation.

600 is insane. Do NOT get Monroe they suck. On tirerack's site there is a list of installers. (or there used to be)

Tockio blues are better than stock and they are cheap and seem to work quite well even with my Eibach springs

Hmm..Letsee.. at 120k, your boots are probably shredded..so..
KYB GR-2 set will be about $270
New dust boots OEM type or KYB type ~$60-80
Plus about $100-150 for installation at decent shop.

So you're looking at about a $400-500 job altogether.

Adding lowering springs will add $100-250 to the bill depending on which brand you choose. Going from GXE springs to lowered springs will definitely make the car ride more firm. You'll definitely feel the bumps more. It's the tradeoff for better handling and looks. I've gotten used to it.

You can always keep your stock springs and throw them back on if you don't like the ride. Means another $100 at the shop though..unless you do it yourself.

Good luck.
