Car wont start, just loud "click!"
Ive been reading the posts here for a little while and now Ive had to finally ask a Q. Ive got a 98 SE 5 spd, that when I go to start it it makes a loud click. I thought it sounded like the starter pinion popping out, but not running. Thats not it, I tested the starter. I dont have a service manual (I know..Ill buy one now). Has anyone had this problem? Or does someone have somewhere I could look for a wiring diagram of the starting system? ANy help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

lights work? Starter is dead
lights don't work? Battery or Altenator is dead
starter dead? have it replaced
battery or altenator dead? take the batter to a place and have it checked
if you have a 95 .. there is a starter recall..
if you have a 97.. some 98's affected. depending on VIN number... there is a altenator recall..
meaning fix for free

I bench tested the starter, and it is poppong out and running. I guess I dont know how much torque it making but it should at least try to turn the engine. Ive already got the new alternator. Any other ideas?

I had the same sound and it WAS my starter. I never tested my bad one, but I replaced it and the car starts like a champ now.
SprintMax, you have chimed in on many posts and I have most often found your info true, but looking on Nissan's website, I found the 97-98 Alternator recall, but nothing on the 95 starter. If this is correct, I'd love to know because that's $100+ back to me! If you could please link that info. Thanks

It is the starter . When I had it off the car to bench test it, the extra current must have been enough to make it work. I put it back on the car and jumped the signal wire to the battery a few times and it turned over. Now with it hooked back up if I sit there and keep clicking the starter with the key it eventually starts. Im having it rebuilt tomorrow. Problem solved.

On my 89 celica, I had problems w/ my car just giving me a "click" sound when either the temprature was cold or hot. That car went through 4 starters, bypassed the ignition key w/ a starter button YET IT STILL DIDNT START. Well, I sat there, and figured something out... the wires used for the starter was too ******* thin. BASICALLY, what i'm saying is, check your wire connections first.
and if you have searched first, you would have found a bunch of threads about it!!!!!!
