a/c evaporator ?

a/c evaporator ?

i have a 96 GLE and my a/c went out. when i took it to the dealership the mechanic said it would cost all together $300 wirh free-on and labor. is that what it shoudl usually cost? i did search and didnt see anything about prices. thanks

are you sure it was the evaporator(cost over $250) or just the expansion valve(cost less than$100) leaking,if they charge you only $300 than it's a hell of a deal,my 300ZX cause about $800 to change the evaporator.

If its your evaporator, then $300 is an awesome deal. I would try and find otu more. My car has the same problem. When you change the evaporator, you gotta change the expansion valve and also the receiver/dryer (I believe). The evap is the most costly part. It would cost me about $500 more or less. I'd do it myself, but I dont knwo how lol.

well they part he changed was square and look like a small like radiator almost, and the part itself was 225. the rest was labor

That part was the evaporator core, yeah they get expensive, Im pretty sure you are suppose to change two other parts as well.

yes,you have to change dryer every time you work on a/c,but the expansion valve and evaporator core is inside the box under the dash and behind the glovebox,so that's why most people will change that out to to save labor,4-5 hrs job.
