Got a used 96 maxima. Good buy? Tell me your opinion.

Last week i bought a black 96 maxima, but it's gxe (lowest model?), it's got those silver door handles and stuff.. it's got 60k miles and i bought it for $5,800. There are a lot of scratches on the back and it looks like it was keyed on the trunk.. it came with a pretty nice headunit too ah also just discovered that 95-96 maximas have the worst crash ratings... worse than hyundai elantras
did i get a good deal? or do you think i should sell this car?

YOu should sell it to me.

Seriously, if it is in good condition mechanically, a good wax and polish job will do wonders, even on black. You have lots of options- rims, body kits, interior mods, handling, audio- and yo ugot the car fo rcheap, so you are in good shape. If I were you, I would be feeling pretty lucky about it. I OVERPAID, but got a top-of-the-line model in June for $10.5K- loaded, leather, 1996 GLE w/ 58K. You did well.

Thats a good deal. I bought my 96 gxe (no options) for a little under 9 about a year and a half ago...although it did have rims. With just a little $$ put into it, your max can look hot.

Altezzas-
Here is my thing- If you like them, get them. F what the other members say, you put what you like on your ride. Lots of guys hate my rims, or think that they look too much like stock 16" SE rims, but I like them, so that is what matters. I got these for next to nothing on eBay. I bought the tires new. For $600, I went from 15" OEM rims that I disliked to 16" rims on all-season high-perf tires, and I LOVE the look.

If you like the tires that you have (if they are in good shape and grip well), then look into 15" rims. 15" rims are dirt cheap.
Some thinks to look into on a budget:

Clear corners- $15-$40
Front Strut Tower Bar (FSTB)- $20-$150
Rear Sway Bar (RSB)- $100-$150
Tint
White faced gauges (either from an SE model (95-97 only)) or overlays. I went with real OEM ones and love them. I paid $20, but you can pay all different amounts. Search on here for the good and bad brands to use. You can buy them off of eBay, but be careful because some only work on 98-99 models. Most sellers on eBay are too stupid to know this.
Audio mods are a different animal. I am still on stock w/ an added sub, but I am workign slowly. You have lots of options. Poke around in the audio forum for more info there.
You also might want to look into buying a stock wing from an SE or GLE model. This can do a LOT for black GXEs. You also might want to shave some or all of the factory lettering and badging from the car- this is free. I am taking mine off and repainting it grey. I don't like chrome.
Lastly, if you hate your door handles, you can get vinyl overlays that look a lot like paint. this is a cheap solution for you lucky owners of black or white maximas. You can search for more info on this mod as well.

You got a great deal.

I got my 96 GXE for 11,000 with 42,000 miles and a 100,000 mile warranty.

You have the fastest Max since 2002. Check car-stats.com, for the 96 GXE.

Great buy, as far as mods: From cheap to expensive

Shave the trunk emblems, it looks a lot cleaner (free)

Make your own intake (hybrid) This is really really easy and costs about 20.00 from loews. It also gives you a feeling of pride to do the work yourself and save. If your interested PM me or reply to this thread, when i get home from my parents I'll post the easy instructions. (20.00)

Clear corners (custom maxima) (55.00)

Carbon fiber door pillars (60.00) chances are your door pillars are fading these look great, reply or PM if you want the address, I believe it was from eastwood dash

Wheels and tires (discount direct has the best wheels and tire packages.) I got four Konig Reigns (look like they were meant for the GXE) with four Nitto's, mounted and ballanced, delivered to my door for 1,000. Great company to deal with too.

Warpspeed aluminized Y-pipe - great gains, super light and fairly cheap at around 200.00

I hope some of this will at least get you started. I always get compliments for my GXE whether it be a corvette owner, or another automotive enthusiast. Let me know if you need any help, but thats a great car at a great price.

You cannot compare crash ratings for different size classes of vehicles. They are NOT absolute crash ratings, only relative to a certain class....

Did you plan on crashing it? I think you should give it a good buff job and clean up that paint. If it's that far gone, buy a body kit and get it all painted at once.

Skyline emblem on who's car??? Also, those stickers are gone. I just haven't updated my pics. Start with clear corners because it is a good cheap mod(like $30 on ebay), that adds a lot to the look of the car. Body kit my be out of the budget, but you can pick up a front lip for the price of that phone.

Where can I find a front lip for my 95? How many different ones are there? I guess there isn't that much but just wanted to know.

Avalon Racing sells the Stillen front lip. Do a search and you'll find plenty of pics. I borrowed this one off of Max4u's sig(hope he doesn't mind). My body kit is stillen also, but for 97-99.
