Shaving antenna...

When you shave antenna off what do you do for radio? Do you have to get one of the rubber ones and put on back windshield? Is wiring a PITA? Also anyone shave trunk, if so was it a hassel and are you worried you remote openers ever failing. thanks

Once you remove the factory antenna, radio reception quality will be crap. Best choice is to go XM or Sirus radio.

Remote trunk opener (OE or aftermarket) hasn't failed me even once since my trunk keyhole was shaved.

How much do you think it will cost to just shave the trunk keyhole? Or is it just wise to just save the extra money to shave off the door handles plus the antenna plus the trunk keyhole?

Spook

Depends on which shop you go to, some will give you some discount for getting more work done with them, others will charge accordingly. For example, I had custom paintjob, trunk swap, bodykit work done along with having the keyhole/antenna was shaved off. My shop didn't charge me for the keyhole/antenna work. I have no idea how much it'll cost to just shave trunk keyhole, I suspect it's a few hundred dollars without a doubt.

FM is hardly affected since there is also an antenna on the rear windshield. You will lose AM though. Get a Fuba/Zendar style or one that fits in your pillar if you don't want an external antenna. Yes I am worried my remote openers will fail - but they haven't. Good luck.

Re: :o)

you can ground your antenna wiring to metal inside your car in on opposite sides of the car and have great stereo reception, that is how all new BMWs do it with no antennas.

I have a full functioning is300 antenna and it's purely cosmetic..

200-300 to shave antenna and repaint is fair.
150-200 to shave trunk keyhole and repaint is fair.

Even if your trunk remote fails, can't you just push the button on your door???

Why cant you just do the shaving yourself. Use sheet metal, bondo, sandpaper and then paint and prime it. Also for the antenna you can put a new one around the edge of your windshield like they do with new cars and still get great reseption without the ugle antenna.
