Yokohama YK420 / Avid H4

At 54k on my '99 GLE, I must now shed the stock Toyos and put new tires on my baby.

Has anyone had experience with the Yokohama Avid line also sold through Discount Tire as the Yokohama YK420?

How about the Dunlop A2s?

Planning on going to the 215/60's on stock wheels.

Also any other suggestions for around the same price range... $ Thanks for the input.

Just to let you know, this topic has been covered several time in the last 2 weeks. The search function (upper right corner of the page) is helpful.

That having been said, I have no experience w/ the Yokos. But, the Dunlop SP Sport A2s are highly recommended. I have Sumitomo HTR+s, which are in the same category. They run a little cheaper than the Dunlops, but I love them, as do many other users on the org. Price them both out at tirerack.com.

You might consider 215/55/16s and 225/50/16 sizes as well. This will open your options up considerably.

I have the Yoko Avid's 215/60's and what can I say...they're great! Great price, great ride and last long too. I am very pleased with them. I purchased mine on TireRack...had them within 3 days. My mechanic says to stay away from Dunlop's.

I have 205/65/15 YK420's I brought through Discount Tire and they have been great. Great grip and pretty quite wear too. I would highly recomment them, but don't pay disount tire the big bucks, just buy em through Tirerack or take a Tirerack quote to Sears and they will price match it.

I had the Avid V4s in stock size but i switched to Bridgestone Potenza RE950s. From my personal point of view, the Bridgestones are slightly louder (around 40 mph) but they handle better. There's better grip and the car is more fun to drive. At higher speeds, the steering wheel felt light with the Avids but with the Bridgestones, they felt heavier and it gave me a lot more confidence.

AVID H4 owner here...

I had these on my 3rd gen in 17s and they were OK...I mean I though wet traction could have been better but maybe I was expecting too much from the tires or maybe there were worn more than I thought...but on dry land...these things rocked!...I'd probably buy them again....if there was no compelling reason to buy another tire!

Avid H4s...

I had nothing but a bad experience with these tires. Unfortunatley the only good thing about the tires is what's keeping me with them - they will last a long time. Aside from that, they have poor dry, wet, and snow traction. VERY poor. Also, they have soft sidewalls and are very poorly constructed. I have had a bubble form in one and a belt rip in another. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give them no more than a 4. It seems like the Dunlops are the way to go, I reccommend you get those.

Go with yoko's

My dad works at yokohama. I use to have yoko's on my volvo....I never had any problems with them. When it's time for me to get tires for my Max I will go with yokohama tires...hehe...Not to mention the 60% discount I get!

Sport A2s are great the ride is soft and they gripped the road like there was no tomorrow during the rain today.

I've had Avid H4's in a 205/65/15 and loved them. I was looking at tires.com and they show that you can put a 215/60/15 on the stock steel wheel, is that what you are doing and if so how do they fit?

dunlop a2's saved my life in the rain, I have no abs and these tires helped me stop shorter distances during wet, not too good on deep snow.

Sumitomo is made by dunlop so they will have about the same comparison.
