It'll work just as a key, sure. It's just a piece of metal. The chip won't work though. You're pretty much paying for the chip.

Not worth it. Just get a regular key.

No, it won't work. The 5th gen. keys are thicker. I spent a lot of time researching this. I haaaaaaate the stupid, unsymmetrical "spoon" key our cars come with. So I went out on a mission. The best you can do, and this is what I did, is get a '99 key. It is a fairly good looking key. Look in the beginning of chapter 3 of each manual for a picture:

Here's the thing. Look in chapter three of the 2001 manual. You will see a type A and a Type B. The Type B is the anniversary key you are talking about. Well, look at the Type A. That's what I have. You're thinking "But you just said 5th gen. keys won't work for our car". Right but they made a Type A for '99s. It just isn't shown in the '99 manual. So you have two choices. The 5th gen Type A looking key (made for the '99) or the key pictured in the '99 manual. Just be prepared to spend ~$50 due to the chip inside.

Good luck.

You can answer your own question by looking through the .pdf owner's manuals in the I link provided above. Click on the '99 manual and go to chapter three. Is that what your key looks like? Or does it look like the key in the '95-'98 manuals (chapter three)?

The '99+ keys have a transponder chip inside. It's the Nissan Vehical Immobilizer System. If you just take the key and make a copy at Home depot. It won't able to start the car.
