Factory Radio Problem

I was trying to install my system last week, and hook it up to my factory cassette player until I get my cd player. I called crutchfield and they told me to cut the blue wire and connect the amplifier's turn on wire to it. After doing this, it still didn't work. I left it alone when I got in my car they other day and turned on the radio it turned off and something smelled like it was burning. Now when I turn my radio on, the screen shows SC1 then goes back to either the tape player or the radio station but there is no sound. Has anybody heard of anything like this.

basics...
are u installing an amp to boost the power of your factory tape deck (that's what it seems like, but you should clarify). Is this a BOSE system, and if so, are you using the factory BOSE speakers with your amp? When you say you first hooked up the remote turn-on wire to the blue wire behind your deck and it "still didn't work"... do you mean the deck didn't come on, the amp didn't come on, neither came on, or both came on, but no sound??? Did you run RCA wires to the amp for input (does the factory deck even have RCA outputs?)? Did you run a nice big power wire from the battery, thru the firewall, to the amp? Did you run an equally large ground wire as short as possible to an unpainted metal point on the chassis? All of these are needed to have a working amp. Finally, you might try buying a $10 wiring harness from Best Buy or Circuit City or wherever, just to verify that the blue wire coming out of the factory deck really is a remote turn-on wire.
