clunking/grinding sound when car is in reverse

I been getting this weird clunking/grinding sound for quite some time now. Whenever I put the car in reverse, I would hear the weird sound. Just to clarify, this is when the car is in the reverse gear, not actually backing up. No matter if I go from Drive to Reverse, Neutral to Reverse, or Park to Reverse, I still hear the same sound. None of the other gears have that sound. I checked the transmission fluid, and it's fine. Ideas? Tks.

you have CAI? if so then its probably the lower tube rattling somewhere on the fender. Thats what I figured out when I had that

Do you have a strut bar? If so is it Loose? Does it come in contact with any part of the engine? Especially the AC line from your compressor. I had a simular noise when I shifted in reverse. So I tightened my Strut bar it and bent a ac line support to keep the line clear of the bar. Now no noise. Hope this helps

Nismo: no, I don't have a CAI. I have the Frankencar intake.

maxger: hm...interesting, I'll check that out.

Well I checked out the FSTB and every nut was pretty tight, so it couldn't be the FSTB. Now I really have no idea where the sound is coming from.

The sound is still there. I noticed something additional. Not only would I get the clunking/grinding sound when I put it in Reverse, the whole car would jerk for a split second. Could it be the engine mount or strut mount?

You're kidding? My tranny? Hm...I really hope not. If that's the case, the heck with a rebuild...5spd conversion!

Traitor.

I would agree with the FSTB suggestion. I had a sound similar to what you are describing and basically the "bar" part of the FSTB had come lose and just needed to be re-tightened.

The other time I had sound issues with putting the car in reverse was when my parking brake cable snapped my my rear brakes froze onto my rotors. That sucked. However, where you live, I doubt that's your problem.

lol...actually I'm kidding on the 5spd swap part. Too much of a hassle if you ask me. I rather just sell/trade the car and get another car with a manual tranny. I might just do that depending if it's the tranny that is the problem.
