Gutted cat, wow!

I've had my custom 2.5 inch exhaust on the car for a little over a month now. On the way to work yesterday, the car was making a nasty rattling in the muffer and the car wouldn't pull strong in 3rd gear. So I matted it, and as the car stopped pulling around 4500 rpm, I hear the rasp dissappear and the car pulled real strong. Apparently the cat internally let go (and peices of it were hung up in the muffler). The exhaust got reasonably louder but pulls like no other, the best the car has run. I can't tell yet if all the honeycomb material is gone in the cat, but I'm willing to bet alot of it is gone. Of course I got a CEL light due to the 3rd 02 not seeing the cat as functional. The car also has a nice pop (unburned fuel) on the shift and the down shift. Judgeing by the SOTP theory, I'm guessing a solid 1-2 tenths and at least a 1 MPH in 1/4 with the cat gone.

I'm going to go back to the muffler shop and get my money back for the cat, but definitly going to leave it hollow.

not sure if the same applies to nissans but most car manufactures feature a limp mode in the cars ecu when the o2 cel's are triggered.

Talk about a bunch of pussies, damn. I HAD a hiflo cat installed, IT decided to let go, I didn't gut it. Morons.

And you guys are *****ing about poluting the air. This is a pic of my Camaro and my brother's. Check out the one on the left (mine), dumps not cats. The one on the right, full Borla exhaust, no cats.

What do you want people to say? Congrats, let's all drive around with no cat so that we can gain .05 sec on a quarter mile time while we're just doing city driving anyway, stuck in rush hour and letting more pollutants wallow their way out? Crap, just cut a hole in your hood and have the exhaust flow out of there.

I mean, d4mn...I'm all for doing anything possible to free up an exhaust system for extra gains when it comes to something that matters, like the track, but do you really need that extra .5 HP out on the streets that badly?

We're not tree hugging hippies, we just care about our environment. What affects the environment will come around and eventually affect us. Without a cat, you're emitting 10-20X more pollutants into the air. I suppose you would just prefer to live in a world where everything is hazy due to smog, you can't breath well, and you can't figure out why all the ones close to you are dying from breathing related diseases. Keep on trucking with your bad self, President Bush.

FYI, I'm an environmental engineer and I probably know more about this stuff than youself.
