Is a rebuild worth it?

My max just passed 115k yesterday after a tire replacement and I am beginning to notice a fall of in total power now. A mechanic mentioned to me that before I even think about going with boost to totaly rehaul the engine before. He stated that adding boost at this point in time (note: I got the car at 107k) would destroy the internals. If I rebuild, what should I buy? Stock internals or aftermarket ones? Are the power gains from just the aftermarket pistons alone a substantial gain of power? I could not fgure this out for my own sake. Anyone with vast knowledge please help!!!

Anyone? Geez, I could have sworn posting something different was a way of getting an answer. Nobody in this forum knows anything??? Hardly, piston companies and engine internals....hmmm I hope someone will some day speak up... until then.........................

So you are ready to rebuild your engine just because your "mechanic" said so? What was the compression on all cylinders? What was the result of the leakdown test? How is your gas mileage? What were the results of the Blackstone Labs oil analysis? If you don't the answers to at least 3 of these questions, you and your "mechanic" can't really say if your engine needs a rebuild in order to go boost.

And giving a reply is not always about whether or not we KNOW the answer. It's about how the question was asked and if people here are willing to spend some time giving you an answer. ie... was your question well researched before asking? Would you actually understand a well detailed reply?

Like jeff said, have some of those test done on your motor, they can reveil alot. And take this into consideration, if you do need to have it rebuilt you may want to look into getting a used motor with 60-70k miles on it, these motors are built pretty well and can take a substantial amount of abuse. I don't know how much a rebuild cost on these motors but I'm willing to bet that you could just about buy a used engine and get it installed, for about the same amount as buying new internals and having someone do the work to put them in the motor.

Used VQ motors arent really a high demand engine, so u can find a used one for as low as 500 or as high as 3000+. and since labor prices are pretty much universal, really comes down to how much u get the motor for.

I had a leakdown test done a month ago and it showed very cose to specs. provided by Nissan. I had the bell housing (mine ended up with a hole in it) and clutch (OEM was recommended over act street) then and had the compression test done and it showed the compression to be nearly identical between all 6 cylinders. Would this 500-3000 dollar amount include the tranny? Probably not. Installed and everything how much would this cost me, and would I be better off using an 60k-70k motor over rebuilding mine with better internals?

*if you are wondering why I had a hole in the bell housing....well that is due to an incorrect ACT clutch (street kit a.k.a stage I) and imoproper installation by a local shop. ACT ****ed me off by not replacing the one I bought (which was incorrect fit) due to the wear.
Search for "Transmission Failure" for story.....

the price i gave was just engine, but if ur tranny is still in one piece u shouldnt need to replace it, just get it checked when u put new engine in, if its in good condition, then u can replace it if its bad. ive seen used 5spd transmissions go for anywhere from 500-1500 dollars, not including brand new ones which go for nearly 3k.
