it's been a week since i change my fuel filter and honesty i can say it did improve my fuel mileage...before i was getting around 20-22 mpg from average of 75/25 hwy/local driving...since i change my filter and refill the tank i notice at least 10% increase in mileage..getting around 24-27mpg with that mix of driving also...thought i would share this with you all that's getting horrible mpg...last thought this was done after i did the tune up like new ngk platinum, air filter, check pcv valve, flush tranny,...

 

Yeah, I started a post on this about a month ago. I had the same results. Its amazing what that filter can do.

 

I am going to change mine very soon. Maybe, since this does increase "performance" we should call it a mod?

look, you were suppose to be getting 21 city and 28 highway from the factory..


your fuel filter was clogged.. which then gave you lower MPG. now since you have a new filter in, you are back to specs..

Ok, so why does a dirty fuel filter gives you bad MPG. When I think about it, it just restrics the gas flow, but if you don't have a leak you are not loosing any gas; granted the pump has to work harder to push the gas thru, but if anything you should losse power and not so much lower your MPG.

Can some one please explain the tecnicaliry behind it. Thanks.

 

Ill have mine done next week with my 30k tune up. Ill let you know what it does after that....cause right now Im around 23mpg.

 

I'm right with you on this one. If anything, a clogged fuel filter will restrict flow causing a lean condition.

Lean = less fuel consumption in my math book.

 

Maybe the ECU is overcompensating for the drop in pressure and holding the injectors open longer making a richer mixture and thus dropping off fuel economy. All I know is that when you replace the thing, fuel economy gets better. It did for me, my max mpg was 25mpg before the filter change on the highway, afterwards, it was 30mpg.

 

Hmm..well, if a clogged filter causes less power, then that would mean you would need to step on the gas harder to produce the level of power normally needed. This in turn would require using up more gas faster as the engine revs higher and lead to less mpg???

just a wild hypothesis...

also, can I go to Wal-Mart or PepBoys and buy a fuel filter for a
300ZX, or, do those of you that use a 300ZX fuel filter always get
one from a dealer?

Okay, this is messed up but I will do a real check on it soon. I was just thinking about my fuel economy and I kind of calculated I'm only doing about 17.9 mpg. Then I was like "that can't be right", so I did it again and I came out with 20.4 mpg. This doesn't seem right either, because I never push my car and shift at 3K rpm. It is all city miles though. I don't know where I'm going with this, but I will get my fuel filter changed this spring with my tune up! I'll post the official mpg for my car soon also, in about 2 weeks when I refill my tank.

to add my little comment here i got no change in mpg after i changed all filters. i think to actually get any difference the filters must be totally clogged.

i should stop changing them all every 5000 miles and see if i feel anything

 

Now, do you guys recommend an OEM filter? Or, will a Auto Zone / Kragen work just as well?
