VW Jetta, whats the story?

Ok, I know the mods don't like street racing on here but I think this should pass inspection. Last night I had a brand new VW Jetta GTI (?) come up on me. We raced and I could tell it was 5 speed (6?) anyway, it was damn fast through 1st and 2nd. I caught up at about 90. They left after that so I didn't get a chance to pull them over and check it out. Whats the story on these cars? What do they have under the hood. I was very impressed.

v6 is 174hp aftermarket (turbo)supercharger adds another 70hp (claimed). it's a few hundred pounds lighter too. jettas have a lot of low end torque so unless you have an open stretch of road it will really make you sweat. but they fade at 80+ mph.

It was probably the 1.8 turbo jettas, I think they're rated around the 235 HP mark...they're fast no doubt.

I have a friend with a 98 1.8L turbo Passat and that runs low 15s, the Jetta is even lighter than the Passat as well

1.8T jettas have 180HP and it's actully at the wheels cause that's how VW does there tests and with a chip it adds 30HP and alot of torque and there fast as **** when you add chip, intake, exhuast and downpipe, Max's don't stand a chance....

And if it was a GTI, then it's even worse cause there light like crazy

my .2 cents

Me and my firends brand new GTI 1.8t raced and I beat him by half a car length. We were both new at driving stick and were stock. He thinks he can beat me now since he knows how to launch his car better but we will see. They are just as fast a max stock. A GTI looks like a golf so it was probrably a 1.8t Jetta. With a chip they make a little over 200 horses and 240 ft/pds of torque. Stock they have like 180hp and just as much torque. I was going to get a GTI 1.8t but couldn't afford.

If thats the case, then this one was probably stock. Like I said it was fast off the line (I was also sleeping a bit, doesn't help) But when it hit 3rd, I started gaining in a big hurry. They only had about a car on me until then, and we were dead even at 90. Also, I was running N/A because my nitrous bottle is empty. What a time to get caught dry huh? LOL

180hp actually......

If it was a GTI it must have been the golf.....those cars are pretty quick especialy cause there turbo'd....all those cars need a little chip to raise to the boost and remap the ECU and they could be in the 240hp range easily...I know...i lost to one b4 =(

Wrong. Flat wrong. The Audi/VW 1.8t rated at 180hp puts 136 to the ground (quattro) which, considering the losses expected from an AWD drivetrain, is not bad at all. Furthermore, the chips available for that will get you between 200-220hp (crank) on all models that use that engine. Higher than that, you need to upgrade your turbo kit because you are already pushing what the stock turbo is good for. The guys with big upgraded turbo kits however, put about 250+ to the ground (again quattro/4motion) so watch out for them!

The Audi TTs come with the 180bhp 1.8T engine standard, then the 225bhp is optional..

Most of the information in this thread is wrong.. It might have been a Jetta GLI, in which case its the new VR6 which makes over 200 hp, and its a 6 speed.

Also, stock VW 1.8t's will NOT hang with a 4th gen 5 speed max. Their 0-60 is like 7.5 seconds and quarter mile is in the 15s.

When you chip them, its a whole different story of course.

Yup if it was a GLI, then its the 6sp 24 valve VR6, rated at over 200 hp. The 1.8t is rated at 180hp, but most stock 1.8t's dyno 170ish at the wheels (close to 200 hp crank), and run the quarter around 15.0, +/- a few tenths depending on the driver. Chipped w/intake, 1.8t's run mid to low 14's.

For those of you with friends or personal experiences with 1.8T VWs in general, how would you compare the interior to our 4th gens? Mainly quality-wise...I like the layout of the 4th gen interior, and thought the materials used were fairly high quality when compared to other low-to-mid priced japanese imports (in general again), but I do have a number of rattles and squeaks on the interior by now (100k, and only the last 6k or so have been with my stereo installed).

Just curious, friend of mine with a 99 1.8T A4 swears by German interior quality in general over most japanese makes. He's a big maxima fan, and puts the A4's interior quality higher...and does know his cars well enough to do pretty much all typical DIY maintenence and then some, etc, etc. I'm just curious to see if the interiors in the VWs is of the same caliber as the 1.8T A4s, and if recent year 1.8t-ish models interiors hold up better than our max's.

As much as I hate VW styling, I can't help but ponder the combo of VW praised suspension (fwd in this case, but still) + the tweakability of the 1.8T, especially in the smaller GTI.

well i raced a jetta 1.8T and i left him like 4 cars, my max is auto and just have intake. I think depends the driver too, but if the jetta has chip mmm theres another result. If you can get at the start some extra power the jetta will never pass your car.

stats on the GTI

VR6
1.8T

I have found Edmunds.com to be the most reliable as far as stock information.

as you can see:

the VR6 has 174hp
the 1.8t has 180hp

I can tell you the VW interiors are very sweet. They are almost identical to Audi interiors. Go sit in a passat and then in an A4, they look almost the same on the inside (outside is similar too) . I think the only difference is that A4's have that aluminum or wood trim on the inside, otherwise the interior materials are very similar.

IMO their interiors look a lot better than ours and are built more solidly too (Nevermind that all VWs except the Passat are built in Mexico)

My dad has a 2001 Passat 4 Motion Wagon, he has almost 50k miles on it, and the interior has been great so far, no rattles, except the steering wheel clicks a little when turning.
