Naked oil covered babes who like max!

Sorry! I was forced to change my subject to get someone to look at my post :-) Does anyone know how many quarts it takes to change the gear lubricant in the transaxle on a 97' 5spd Max? Nissan does not seem to know since they decided to not include this spec in the owners manual!?!

4.5 to 4.8 liters. Have 5 quarts on hand and you might have a little bit left over.

Thx for the reply Daniel. I picked up 6 qts of Mobil 1 Synthetic GL-5 75w-90 today. I have 67k on the odo and with the weather on the cold side the shifting has seemed notchier that it has in the past. Hopefully the synthetic will help smooth it out.

I would reconsider putting GL5 gear oil in your tranny. You can still get synthetic GL4 75W-90 oil, for example, Redline MT-90. I put Redline in my car last year, but can't say it made a big difference.

I put Redline in my transmission this past weekend, and I noticed a difference right away. I bought 5 quarts of fluid, but only ended up using about 4. It's somewhat difficult to get the fluid into the transmission without spilling, but I used ramps to help me out.

Does your Owner's Manual specify GL-5 gear lubricant? My '99 Maxima calls for GL-4. There is good reason to avoid GL-5 unless your car was designed for it. For futher information, see the Pennzoil FAQ at http://www.pennzoil.com/carcare/faq/default.htm#4

A good way to add gear lube to a 5-speed is to use a funnel with a 3-foot length of clear plastic tubing. The plastic tubing can be obtained at a home improvement store (Home Depot, etc.). Choose a diameter which is a snug fit on your funnel spout. 1/2 inch diameter fits well on my funnel. Position the funnel in the engine compartment, near the battery, and route the plastic tube into the transaxle fill port. Pour the gear lube into the funnel and let gravity do the rest. Take your time, gear lube is thick and does not pour quickly. Some minor degree of spillage is inevitable because the way you know the "box" is full is by observing an overflow.

Daniel,

I found the same Pennzoil site that discusses the differences between GL-4 and GL-5; see https://maxima.org/forums/showthread...threadid=17763

I am glad that I posted my original thread before proceeding to fill the transaxle with GL-5!

Thx for the info..
