Do I need to use this hanger? The mechanic didn't put it on......grrrr, I hate having others work on my car.

I have a hanger on mine. That one does look a little used though. See if the pipe is sagging at the flex section at all. If not and it doesnt rattle then dont worry about it.

without it your flex section will fail prematurely.

When I put in my new exhaust, that hanger bracket was totally rusted out and broke into pieces. Now my exhaust bangs around under the car. Does anyone know the part number for it?

I second that. That bracket helps support your ypipe from excessive movement both vertically and front to back (i.e. under hard acceleration).

Take it back to him, tell him that he can either install it, or buy you a new y-pipe when you bust your flex section.

mine was rusted to hell too and it couldn't have been doing much...but a broken flex section was the reason I replaced it I thought it was a pretty elaborate bracket for what it does...must have been an intern that designed it.

i welded a piece of 1/2" tube (or was it 3/8"...?) to the underside of the y-pipe and ran that across to the hangers. I had to put a little offset up in it, but it was pretty easy....I am sure that that mod was going to rust out before anything else though...but the person that bought the car totaled it three weeks later anyway.

Before I install a y on my current max, i'll try to track down appropriate tubing material to go with the y pipe.

Ok, now I brought the car back to the shop and said that I needed the bracket...they put it on and also welded something....now I get the most annoying sound coming from under my car...the sound is exactly the same sound you would here if a small sesna was flying over your car. Little Buzzy, and distant. It seems to come and go, and only when I am stopped. If I have to go back up there it isn't gonna be pretty. Thanx everyone for the help..any future help with this problem is most welcomed...thanks

Yes you need it--and the rubber mounts that go on with it. It will keep vibrations from making noise and putting unnecessary wear and tear on your exhaust system.
