noise.....differential bearing??

I have a noise that only occurs when I am in neutral with the clutch out. It is a whining sound that I had several mechanics at my work listen to. They all said it sounded like a bad throwout bearing. Well I just had a new clutch kit installed with a new t/o bearing, and the noise is still there. Now the place that installed the clutch kit said that a bearing inside the transmission is probably bad. For the people that have had a differential bearing replaced, is this the problem you had? If not, are there any suggestions?

Sounds like an Input Shaft Bearing in your tranny...when my buddy got his tranny rebuilt the guy at the tranny shop was tellin me what all the differnt bearings do and If i remember correctly, the input shaft bearing is always spinning, even at idle

Bring it to a good tranny shop, not a macanic, a tranny shop that does this day in a day out, and tell him your situation about the new clutch, new Throw out bearing, and let him listen to it..see what he thinks

I had to replace my input shat bearing along with my differential bearings. My tranny use to make a clicking noise in neutral and in gear. It did not matter what gear it was in. The noise followed the speed of the engine ( input shaft)and not the wheels(cv joints).

If the noise happens with the car in neutral then it cannot be a differential bearing. The only bearings spinning when the tranny is in neutral (and the car is stopped) are the input shaft bearings, as Matty stated.

I did take it to a transmission shop. That's where I had the work done. The technician at the tranny shop said that it sounded like a throwout bearing, but since they had just replaced the entire clutch kit, he was skeptical about the T/O being the problem. He suggested that the input shaft bearing could be the source of the noise. I just wanted to see what kind of opinions would come up here. They want $275 plus the cost of parts for the repair. I am supposed to take it back on Monday(Feb. 10) for the work to be done. Unfortunately, I am running low on cash since I just had the new clutch kit put in for $800 and just got a new Passport 8500 for $300. I'm still going to have the work done for the peace of mind and the absence of that annoying noise.
