No, they're replaceable. You have to take out the climate control unit and take the unit apart somewhat to access the replaceable bulbs. It's easy, just need philips and flat head screwdrivers. I did it on mine.

yeah the same thing happened to my auto climate control unit...your best bet is to pick up a Hane's or Chilton's manual for our maxes b/c it gives detailed, step-by-step instructions for this procedure...plus it has so much useful info on how our cars work from top to bottom..ok good luck. let me know how you make out

I replaced mine a few months ago also. Go ahead and replace all of them while you are back there. Just take the unit out and the bulbs are screwed in the back. You do not have to take any panel off or anything to get to them. Here is a link for removing the head unit but it will get you to the a/c too:

Good luck!

Same problem

I have the same problem with my 97 Maxima SE, one of the climate control bulbs went out. I'm getting the bulbs next weekend, I just want to know how long this repair will take. The audio removal site mentions that the clips for the ashtray will be lost or stay in place or something, but will I need to replace anything, or will this be easy? Are there any other sites with center console/ACC removal instructions, because my Chilton's manual only tells how to remove the whole dash. Thanks!

Keep in mind that the auto-climate control for the 97 is different. The 98 and 99s are the same and have the easily replaced bulbs. I'm not sure about the 97s.

I have a 97 and mine were the easy kind to replace. I ordered my bulbs from Courtesy but I dont remember them being much over $2 each. That car stereo link is all you should need to get to the bulbs. Once that big piece with the radio and acc comes out just turn it around and you can access the bulbs.

I had the same problem last year. Use the carstereohelp website for instructions to get the dash apart--they were fine. Only remember to pull out and up on the vent/clock portion of the upper dash. It is a pain. The bulbs are easy though--they just screw in the back of the control unit. I'd recommend replacing all the bulbs whether they are burned out or not. You don't want to have to rip it apart again in six months for two $7 bulbs.
