Synthetic Oil Vs. Regular Oil

Maybe this question has been answered sometime back, but I just need a little clarification: Does synthetic oil make your Max smoke? I was talking to a mechanic the other day and told him I was interested in putting synthetic oil in my Max 72k miles. He said it was a good idea and recommended Royal Purple. I have heard from different individuals that synthetic oil in higher mileage cars will cause excessive smoking. My Max does not smoke now, just wondering if anybody has ran into this issue. Thanks for any info.

You can switch to syth w/o a problem. Just keep the weight the same. With a good filter you should be able to extend your oil change intervals.

That's a new one

No, synthetic oil will not make your car smoke. There is the possibility that seal leakage can occur on high mileage cars that have been neglected, but this isn't very common. 72k on a VQ isn't high mileage and some have been switched at 130k and beyond with no issues.

I'm not a big fan of Royal Purple though. There are three synthetics I would consider: Amsoil, Mobil 1 and Redline. The rest aren't worth the price they charge for the benefits you get.

Some Post Whoring...

Nothing but Mobil 1 10W-30 for my baby. Put it in ever since I got it (82k miles, now 83.5k) and my dad wants me to change my oil after 5k instead of 3k miles. Think it'll last that long? 5 bucks a quart!

Re: Synthetic Oil Vs. Regular Oil

I agree with all the other assessments. Early synthetic oils would slip right by the oil seals pretty easily. That's not a problem today. I just changed to Mobile One for the first time and have not had any problems at all with oil consumption. I'm pushing 90K miles and have been running the Mobile One for one oil change. I also noticed a small but noticable improvement in engine performance as soon as I switched.

5k intervals are absolutely fine even with normal non synthetic motor oil. With synthetic, you can probably go 5k under any conditions. You may read Bill99GXE's oil analysis spreadsheet sticky for oil details. FYI - I use mobil one 5w30 with OEM filter and change every 5-7k with 50/50 driving.

Synthetic oil prices

Hello all,
Costco has Mobil 1 for $3.98 a quart. I use Mobil 1 5W30 and Wix oil filters.

Wow, 4 bucks? Hmmm, that'll prob save us like $10-20 an oil change. Thx for the info. Never though to check Costco, we buy bulk food from there What oil filter should I use? My dad bought Fram filters for our cars, already in, and I read on here they're not good. Any suggestions? :attention

oil filters

Costco is a great place to buy oil. The filter I use is WIX filters.
The part number is 51356, approx $6 at a NAPA store. This is for the 4th and 5th gen Maxima including the ones with 3.5 VQ engine.
Costco also had a great deal on tires (michelins and Bridgestones). They had a special of $60 off a set of 4 tires
I was able to get P215 55 ZR 16 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S for $179 each including taxes, mounting and balancing, lifetime flat fix and lifetime tire rotation. Unfortunately, the special ended Feb 4. This was for my 99 SE.
If they dont carry Bridgestones or Michelins that you want, they will special order for you without charge.
Right now, they are going for $175 each including mounting and balance but without tax. If you look at tire rack, its $175 each but it doesnt include shipping, or mounting and balancing.
So right now tax should be added to the $175 tire price as well as tire disposal fee, etc.
Still a great price!
KRIS

My boss at work said he put some synthetic oil into his grand am and he had a smoke screen (like the original Batman & Robin TV show). On my next change I am going to go with the synthetic oil. I was told oil change every 10k and filter change every 5k. Thanks for the info fellas.

Oil

I've been usin' Mobil 1 since I bought my Max when it had 55k. Now I have 94k and change my oil religiously every 3k miles. Never-ever have had I any problems. Synthetic oils are far better than regular due to the position of Carbon atoms and the Carbon chain.
I think that there's nothin' better than Mobil 1 oil. It's been used in Europe for ages in rally cars. BMW, Ford-Cosworth, Mercedes and many other European car companies use Mobil 1 for racing.
You can also purchase trisynthetic blend oil by Mobil.
It's about $5 per quart. Always try Wallmart first - I buy my oil there. It's cheaper than Autozone or some other places.

Do you have anything to base this on, other than opinion. If you cruise through Bill's spreadsheet http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hreadid=100060 (recently updated) you'll find some info that will make you re-think some of the misconceptions you may have about the different oils available.

I also, I would be shocked if the Mobil 1 oils used in a racing program were the same formula as what's available OTC.
