I take it the dealer sold you the car - they're bound to say it's normal. Well, it isn't - especially on a car as young as a 98 with only 52k miles.
Have a mechanic check the valve clearances.

u can hear the noise with open hood. it sounds kinda normal, but really loud for some reason. i will see if other maximas at the dealer have the same thing, maybe i'll take it to nissan dealer to check it out.

Most all VQ's idle with a nice quiet smooth ticking sound.

It's normal.

A metal to metal tap is not normal.

Make sure it isn't pinging due to low grade gas.

Yea, mine is real quiet...I can hear a slight constant 'ticking' when I'm in the drive through against a wall, but that's about it.

and of course, when I shut the engine off, and I'm guessing temperature differences in the exhaust system as it cools cause a little bit of variance in the metal, I hear metal pings in what sounds like under the hood. Only after the engine has been shut off though. My hondas always did this.

Thats a normal sound. A friend of mine bought a used 2k last week and wanted me to listen to his engine becuase he said it ticks. I went over and listened to it and realized he was referring to the normal "ticking" sound all maximas make.

Its the injectors working properly...I asked my macanic too and all he told me to do is put my finger on the red part (injector) and feel it and you can feel it working while at idle
