cd player advice - take 2 dealer or audio store

First time poster...great info here...how have I missed this over the years.

Anyone got any advice on best / most cost-effective place to take my '96 GLE Bose cd player for fix. The cd player won't recognize any cd anymore...gives 'ERR' message. I tried the cd cleaner/brush & didn't help at all. Any reason I can't take it to an audio store where I would think it would be cheaper & probably get better qualified help???? I know some cars (Acura's) have a CD "code" that won't allow anyone but dealers to work on them. Anything like that with '96 GLE??? Any advice as to good audio stores in Raleigh NC area would be bonus. Thanks in advance.

If you are wanting to keep the stock cd player in it, I doubt that an audio store could fix the stock one, but I could be wrong. They usually only deal with installs and stuff. My advice would be to get an aftermarket head unit if your price for repair is over like 200 dollars. Some aftermarket units are very very good. Just my 2 cents.

you can get an aftermarket HU, but you have to get special line adaptors to get it to work with the bose amps\speakers. i would suggest replacing the HU unless you want to redo the entire sound system (recommended tho!).

Check on EBay for a replacement HU. There's always a few forsale.
Usually for under $100.

Thanks Time2reup...I'm actually selling the car & need to see what the new owner wants to do...is the pathfinder stereo exactly the same as the maxima bose unit?

I am not too sure about the harness either but we have 1999 Maxima and a 1999 Pathfinder in our family. I have the max and a distant uncle has the pathfinder. They are the exact same stereos on the outside except that the Pathfinder has a little clock button and the maxima doesn't.
