squealing noise? water pump replaced?

hi, i have had thi sproblem where everytime I come to a complete stop, my engine starts making this hi-pitched squealing noise. I would like to know what it could be?
I took it into nissan and they said the water pump needed to be replaced. It cost a whopping $1740!

My first thought is alternator. Use a long screwdriver, put on alternator and listen to noise. Then put screwdriver on timing chain cover. Where the noise is loudest is the bad part. All of this is done very carefully with engine running. I would find myself a good mechanic if I could not do the repair yourself. $1740 is way out of line, stay away from that dealer they are smoking something and it is not cigarettes.

Does your noise go away if you give the car gas? If it does it would not be a water pump. The noise should continue.

When was the last time you replaced your belts? Sounds like a loose belt to me...

I would still check the tightness of the belts. Nissan may have checked the car and decided they would replace your water pump for $1700 and in the process they would tighten the belts. BTW, $1700 for a water pump is criminal.
