[Long] A look inside a knock sensor

So, today I got my new knock sensor for my 95 max.
Took me about 20 minutes to install it.
I noticed some improvements in pickup, we will see about the MPGs.
I was curious to see what I paid over $100 bucks for and what makes it tick, so i decided to get my dremel out and take a peek inside the old one.

The bad one tested with a meter, showed to be completely open ( new one 550K ).
There were two cracks along both sides of the connector, most likely caused from over heating.
So, i cut it open and found nothing really fancy inside. As you can tell from the pictures, it is mostly a hunk of metal sandwiching a ceramic like substance which produces a voltage spike when it "hears" a knock.
I suspect that the cracks let in moisture which ruined the contact between the rings and the ceramic like substance.
I had read here some people believe over tightening the knock sensor makes it over sensative. I dont know how true that is since the bolt that goes through it puts no pressure on the critical part. Overtightening is not a good idea anyways since you are screwing into aluminium.

Well here are the pics: ( to our friend at Motorvate.ca if you want these to use on your site, PM me)

Re: [Long] A look inside a knock sensor

hope that helps.

and the KS actually does not produce a 'voltage spike' rather, its own resistance increases. and as a solid state device, there is nothing interesting inside.

Where did you buy the KS from? I'm pulling the 0304 code, so I might need one also. The dealer near me is wanting $180! I know that's too much.

Thanks.

I can not see the pictures either.

My Maxi got 0707 and 0304 code for months now. They keep coming back every 200-300 miles. Maybe need to replace? Folks, if you have found good price on KS, please post. Thanks.

I'm not seeing the pictures either, but if you email them to me (hype@vanillaice.com) I'd be happy to host them. I know the KS is pretty simple, but I'd be interested in seeing the internals.

0707 = Rear Heated O2 sensor
The knock sensor reading is probably going off because of the 0707...replace the O2 sensor, reset the ECU, and see if 0304 comes back.

xHypex;
I used one of the suggested sites (Clubphoto.com) to host the pictures, they were good till today, but now
I will email them to you...

The best deal I found was at expressautoparts.com $107, free shipping.
They are located in NY, part came from NJ.
It is Bosch F6020-51596.

I also had the rear O2 sensor code (0707?), which comes and goes all the time, I will try cleaning it. after resetting the CEL, the KS code was always there, and when I saw the cracks on it, I knew it had to go, regardless of the O2 code.

You can give Ken a call at JRNissan. He sells them for 120 + shipping i believe.
