NOx sensor help

Hi, recently I had my car smogged and it passed but the mechanic did me a favor by resetting the check engine light before checking it. He told me the code was for the NOx sensor and said it should be checked out if it appears again. It was fine for a few hours and then the check engine light came on again. I'm assuming it's the NOx sensor again. Can someone please tell me a cheap way to fix this or what I should be doing? I don't want to spend lots of $$$ at the mechanics because I'm almost broke. thanks

Check the Top Four posts starting with IMPORTANT... they have the FAQ.

Your mechanic probably meant O2 sensor... There are no NOx sensors on our car... NOx readings are from tailpipe sniffer machines.
