knock scesor

the ecu retards the timing. since it can no longer tell if the fuel is high enough octane that no knocking will occur, so it assumes that every compression stroke would cause knocking and retards the timing accordingly. this way, you will not ruin your engine from knocking even if the knock sensor is dead. the downsides are that you have poor mileage and performance. but better than loosing an engine.

1) you feel no difference if the KS is connected or disconnected
2) you have no low end power
Then:
You need a new knock sensor.
Pull the codes from your ECU. If you get 0304, then that is more proof that your KS needs replacing.

The knock sensor won't affect valve ticking. There is no way to set the timing, it is controlled by the ECU.
