How do I check ECU and NOT reset the CEL when finished?

I want to check the codes and see why the CEL is on. Then I'm taking it to a shop to get fixed under warranty. I want the light to stay on after I get the codes so that when I take it to the shop (later that day) it will still be light up. Then when they fix it I'll ask them what was fixed and see if what they say is what I got off the light. If i pull the codes, and then just turn off the car will the light be on the next time I start it? I don't want to ecu to lose the codes just by checking them.

Thanks!
