100 octane fuel
100 Octane Unleaded wouldn't do anything for your car unless its boosted (supercharger or turbocharger). Our cars are designed to run on 91 octane, anything more than that isn't necessary. I go to gas stations that have 93 octane and not only up to the 91. These gas stations tend to have better quality gas, so I don't just buy it just because its 93 octane.
Also, for all you guys, check out the gas stations around your area. Often you may notice that two gas stations will have the same prices, but one will have 93 Octane for Super and the other will have 91 Octane. Often the price difference will only be a few pennies.
As for 100 Octane, the only place I know of where you can buy it from a pump is from an Airport. Even then, its 100LL, or 100 Octane Low Lead. Which means you can't run it in a car with catalytic converters or it will destroy them. 100LL is generally about 80% to 100% more expensive than 87 Octane at the gas station, last I knew anyway (summer of '97, 87 octane was about $1/gal and 100LL was about $2/gal, gas prices have since gone up obviously).

It helps by fighting detonation or pinging. In boosted cars, detonation is a big problem. In our cars most of the time we cannot retard ignition timing to combat detonation, that's why we run colder plugs. The increase in octane rating shows the gas's ability to combat detonation. The higher the better.
BTW, higher octane gas is not a HP boost. It only fights detonation.
