Shift Lock Button Stuck (4th GEN)

I am having problems with shift lock mechanism on my 95 Maxima. I can start and remove the key fine but the shiftlock button is stuff no matter what. Occassionaly I can get it to release but I can not figure out what exactly pattern.

I tried with brake pedal depressed and tried with out brake pedal depressed. I'm not sure what to look for. I red about the brake light switch but not sure exactly where it is or whether it is the cause.

Anybody with any knowldege of this who can help would be appreciated.

on the front of the brake pedal there are 2 sensors that activate when the brake pedal is stepped on. Im assuming thats what your looking for. they are way up there one is for the brake lights and I think the other is the shift lock mechanism sensor.....I think.

Or one is for ASCD and the other is both brake lamps and shift solenoid combined

Well, that's an alternative. I don't have my FSM or Haynes handy, so can't confirm it. The other possibility is that your shift solenoid (built in to your PRNDL shifter) is sticky.

Does any one know if there is a manual way to release the shiftlock button? I cannot get it to release any more.

look in your owners manual. there should be some place that tells you how to do the "manual release"

When you push your brake pedal, do you hear a click coming from your shifter - that's the shift solenoid clicking.

If you don't hear anything, you either have faulty wiring to the solenoid, or the solenoid itself is defective.

I don't believe there is a manual relase **** for 4th gens. Newer Nissans have a small trim slot you can remove to insert a screwdriver and manually release the lock.

You could remove the shifter trim and manually search for the release. I've done it on a Sentra PRNDL, I'm sure it can be done on ours too.

I can't find any thing in the manual about a "manual" release. The section about shiftlock only mentions that if my stop light is not working properly the shiftlock button will lock up. But I checked my brake lights and all three are function normally.

You are right. When I press on the brake pedal, there is no click from the shifter. Any suggestion on how I can troubleshoot the solenoid or wiring?

i neva fixed it...but if open the center console...the solenoid is sitting rite there by the shifter...it's frustating...but stop and start engine...and press and release brake pedal...that was my only solution..

the trim thats around the shifter is held in by 4 clips, pry up on it and it will pop off just be careful to not force anything.
