Different Part #'s for 5-spd Tranny: diff. bearings
Different Part #'s for 5-spd Tranny: diff. bearings
hi guys
I was talking to (turbo95max) and he is helping me out w/ my tranny swap. He pointed out to me that there is an updated part number for the 5-spd Tranny on the 4th gens. I haven't gotten that number from him yet, but I was wondering if anyone had any information about this. I am trying to figure out if the differential bearings have been fixed... and if it was more common for them to go bad on the older version of the tranny.
Anyone who has dropped their tranny, gotten it replaced, or had the 5-spd swap... can you post your tranny part #? I want to see if there are just 2 of em. And also please include w/ the part number if that was the tranny that had the bad differential bearings. Thanks!

I may be way off, but I never thought the bearings themselves were an issue. My impression of the problem was that it was common for incorrect shims to be used, causing the bearings to go bad. I think it was a manf/cost cutting defect, and not the parts themselves.

That's what I heard too. I just want to see if the problem was "isolated" to a specific part# so that people would know not to get a used one from the junkyard w/ that number. I know it has occured alot in the 97 5spds... I have a 96 w/ probably the same part #'s and stuff w/ the 97 tranny and have this problem.
