Tranny fluid change or flush?

How often should the auto tranny fluid be changed or flushed? My car is at 81k miles, I got it at 77k miles so I have no idea what was done before.

I've heard if your car is above a certain milage, you should just leave it as is, because there is gunk in there the tranny needs.

I woudl flush your tranny about the same time you change your spark plugs, 60k or 65k.

I just changed mine over the weekend, at 50K. I drained it cold over the weekend and got 5 quarts out thru the drain and another 1 quart when I dropped the pan. The magnets were full of crap, glad I cleaned it.

Anyone have a write-up on how to perform a tranny dain/flush? I heard it's a lot of work and it's just easier to get a flush done from the dealer.

jminchnya: I also heard that on autos, it takes about 10 quarts of ATF. I guess there's still 4 quarts of used ATF left in the engine?

The dealer would carge me $180 for a flush, and Peopboys or Midas would charge me $120.

Is it worth going to the dealer?

The guy at Midas suggested I just leave it alone as I had reached 80k, he said the gunk in there helps things move around.

I know I got some old left in, but the fluid was in OK shape, only 55K, so it's not too bad. If you have higher miles and really want to flush it, the machines are the only way.

You should change all the oil system of the tranny. I made that, every 30,000 miles, man my tranny almost die before that. It took me 12 ltrs. of ATF

i've heard this as well
but when i had to rebuild the transmission on my old maxima, the tranny guy told me it's better to change it like every 30k or so, after 60k.. because the fluid looses it's functionality over time, plus you may be slowly getting a build up of metal shavings or something in there which is better to flush out than to leave in.

it only makes sense to me to change it..
all fluids need to be changed.

Manual says to do it every 30000, which is the same as a radiator flush. There are a couple of ways to do it. I'm not too sure if theres a drain plug on the tranny but if there is, you can drain it, flush it with about a .5 quart of tranny fluid, and then fill it up, not sure how much. Start the car. pull up the brake, press the brake hard with your left foot and go through drive reverse drive at about 2k rpms. shut down and repeat till its clean. You can also get a machine to do it, if you do it where i work (Grease Monkey in North Plainfield, its 89.99.) and that does everything for you. If your car is older or your transmission pan is leaking, then it might be more advisable to replace the gasket in the pan, clean it up, and clean the magnet. If you do it that way and just fill the tranny, then you wont drain all the trans. So my advice, get it flushed somewhere.

Man a lot of dif. after my tranny had new oil i felt a very smooth shift gears, and wooooowww my top speed was very dif. from 128 to 136, my mechanic explain me that the dif. was the tranny work better at high speed cause everypart is lubricate and theres less friction on it. Do it ASAP it. But all this process take like 1 hour, cause a machine drains the old oil(man!! very dirty) and clean it with new ATF oil, after that...put just new oil...thats why takes 12 qrts

Ok so is it worth having the dealer flush it at $180 in contrast to say Midas ($130)?

What about idea of just leaving the tranny alone since I am at 80k?

Doing nothing is the only guaranteed way that you WILL have a problem.

All professional flush and fills most likely use the same machinery, or at least the same type of machinery. One place over the other would be purely a personal decision. I would go for the cheapest place.

Why not do drain and fills like what I did? Total invested: $15 at most so far. Maybe another $7 to go.
