Valve maintenance?

Hello, (before the flames come, I tried the search function, and it isn't
functioning)
I am the proud owner of a high-mileage(160,000) '95 SE 5-spd, but my baby sounds a little rusty. I am hearing some noise which sounds like
sticky lifters, and I was wondering what options are available to fix it. I also know that the VQ has a "bucket and shim"(?) design which makes adjustment left only to professionals. My performance is not negatively
affected, but my car sounds like a friggin' diesel when running. Your help is greatly appreciated.
