HELP: car won't start

I went to start it and it was if the battery was dead. no sound and no dash lights. I tried to jump start it. After several minutes it started but as soon as i let go of the gas peddle the car died. When it was running there was a strange sound from right side of engine. I think my alternator might have went bad and it was the belt i heard but not sure. Is there a way I can check if alternator is done. I do have a multimeter to check ohms just not sure how to use it.

Check the volts (not ohms!) between the positive and negative connections on your battery. Engine stopped, it should be 12 volts, engine running, it should be about 14.6...

There are a lot of other things that can go wrong but that is a quick check to see if its charging or not...

By the way, did you check to see that the belt is still on the alternator?

Good luck,

Jim
