Re: Grinding....Bearing Problem?

I was going around a curve in my apartment complex and heard a grinding coming from the passenger side front of the car. This is my question could this be the wheel bearings going bad. This is my reasoning:
1. When I was going around the curve I was not accelerating and had my foot on the clutch. I wasn't braking either.

2. I haven't had any whining or any other problems when accelerating. So, I don't think it is the differential bearings.

3. This it has done it twice now and both times it was after the car had been sitting. The first time about a 3 hour timespan and the second overnight ~ 12hours.

So what do you guys think? I really hope it is not the differential bearings and just a wheel bearing problem. This is the second problem within about a week!

I am going to check this when I get home. Would it make this sound even if I wasn't braking at the time?

I would suggest checking torque on the wheel studs first...if one is a bit loose it can tension up on turns and create friction/noise.

I just went thru and replaced all the front wheel bearings and seals and it still did not fix my problem.

Yes, it supposed to make the noise any time the wheel is turning. It's such a faint noise though that you would only hear it once in a while. Good luck.

I think it might be the brake wear indicator. It is like nails on a chalk board for only 5 seconds at the most. It isn't real loud, I had to turn the radio off to hear it better. I will keep you guys updated.

I would think wheel bearing would be more persistant, right? And wouldn't go away when you accelerated.

This is true, unless it is just starting to go? I don't know I am going to check my brake pads tonight. I will give you an update tommorrow night, I won't have access to a computer until then.

It was the wear indicator! I got some Raybestos Quiet Stop pads tonight from Pep Boys. I will be putting them on, on Sunday.

It also could simply be that your aluminum plate behind the hub is rubbing - I had the same problem at one time, and it would only make the noise on turns.

Just bend it slightly back with your hands.

Yeah, I checked my pads last night there was about 1/16 of inch left of pad in the front. I will make sure that plate isn't touching anything as well.
