y-pipe power

I'd search but its down so I have to ask. My friends wont believe me that a y-pipe fo the max will free up around 15hp. I know that someone review the pipe and had it dynoed. I'd really apreciate it if you can post the link.(One of them is a sceptical maxima owner, the truth must be known).

I don't know where the link is but just tell him that the car is a V6 so it's shoving out alot more air. The aftermarket Y-pipe releases that air with much much much less restriction. Thus the big horsepower gain.

i also do not have the link, but i can tell you that y-pipe gains average anywhere from 8-18hp. for the most part i would say around 12 or so, but many people have gotten in the 15 or higher area

Y-pipe will make a good diffrence..i got my 98 max dynoed after my Y-pipe and pully and i got 5 hp and 13lb tq gain at the wheels wich is about 8 hp and 22lb tq at the fly (with a PullY)...whic is really good. Then i got Hi-flow cat, and a greddy cat back because u have to remember the air goes out of the engine quicker with the new down pipe(y-pipe) but it has to go some where from there too..and i got a total of 17 hp and 21 tq gain from a full exhaust system(y-c-e). A y-pipe is most def worth more then a exhaust system to me. cause it takes out 2 pre-cat restrictors in the stock y-pipe.

I have the stillen Y-pipe.
Rt cat
Greddy cat back.

What is meant by this is that at the point of peak engine horsepower on the dyno, horsepower maybe only raised 5hp for example from maybe 170 to 175hp, however at other places on the horsepower curve horsepower may have raised more, for example at maybe 4000 it used to indicate 150, now it's at 165...and increase of 15hp. (This is all jsut an example.) Average hp increase is a much better indicator of how a mod effects power output of the engine since you drive throughout the entire rpm range and aren't always at the peak hp point of the rpm range. Hope I helped more than confused.

nope you didnt help at all. i knew everything you said. but the thing is to get an avg you add up all the different averages and you get an avg...but peak should be higher than the avg...the peak says thats the HIGHEST GAIN YOU GOT...BUT THE avg is the avg of peak and lower numbers....

maybe im just not seeing something but i still dont get it

Well if the peak gain is compared to the average gain, and the peak gain is lower than the average....then that's BS. Anyone who knows numbers/math at all will say that can't be right at all. Where are you getting this from by the way....can you post the link?

This shows "peak" is clearly peak engine hp, not the peak hp gained. Peak(greatest) hp gain is 31hp at just over 6k rpm, and average hp gained is 19hp over an rpm range of 4k to 6.5k, which is higher than the hp gained at the peak hp point of the engine which was 18hp at about 5.3k or 5.4k rpm.

Remember... they are using Canadian Currency. Do the conversion from CAD to USD and you get about $160

They are a canadian company...multiply their price by the currnet exchange rate (~0.67) and you get the cost of the pipe shipped. I just ordered mine and it came out to $169.00 USD.

naw it won't... i think like 1 or 2 people here failed... just drive your car around for like 30 minutes or something. Get your only cat really warm... this way you'll be fine

The reason people either fail or think they will fail is because the y-pipe gets rid of 2 small pre-cats that the stock pipe has. These work when the car is cold to control emissions, so once its warmed up the main cat is doing all the work... so just get it nice and hot.
