HeLP..Brakes Feel Soft...

Even when I first bought my car I noticed that the brakes feel kind of soft and wasn't sure if this was normal so I decided to get new brake pads. Still feels kind of soft like the pedal has to travel a little more that in other cars to stop. (there was a copule of occasions were I had to slow down from traveling fast to avoid an accident cuasing it to smell like burnt rubber) I also noticed yesterday that only when slowing down and coming to a stop at slow speeds my brakes makes a little noticeable ::squeak:: noise. Do I need new pads again and secondly whats up the the brake pedal feeling soft.

softness

I know my brakes on my '96 se are a bit softer than other cars as well. I believe that the stock brake system is just a little soft, but I don't have any of the squeals or burning smell you are taling about. After replacing pads, bleeding the brakes or getting a new master break cylinder (both fairly easy installs) are the next steps to alleviating softness.

The brake pedal is never all that firm in most cars.

You can also get stainless steel brake lines.

Flush and replace your brake fluid with new fluid. It should be done every few years or every time you change your pads. Brake fluid is hydroscopic by nature and absorbes moisture. Moisture in your brake system will cause premature ware.

I've always noticed a firmer pedal after you replace your fluid. As Lime mentioned, you can change your brake lines to SS lines. That will firm things up quite a bit. The rubber brake line will get soft as time goes by which will add to your pedal travel.

i had my pads replaced by Strauss. I saw the guy pour brake fluid in the resevoir but not sure if he bled it, I have to call and ask. When you let the car ride on the brake from fast speeds to stop quick, does the burn smell i get mean the its time for new pads either though theyt are new, i try to time my stops better now (cant help drving that car hard) and wats your opinions on the slight squeaking,, new pads..again...

Secondly just wanted to say I apprecaite everyone from the org. This place gave me the confidence to work on the car myself and not go to the mechanic.
