possible starter problem?

the last coulpe of days the car has had a tuff time starting up in the morning. and today after work my car wouldn't start. It's as if the battery was dead, but everything other than the car starting up worked. I beleive that the starter is starting to go bad, but if anybody else has another idea, let me know.

If it is my starter, should I get a new one, or go with a re-built one. any other things I should look out for?

btw I have a 96' GXE

thanks for any help.

Before I replaced the alternator I would clean and lube. Instructions on WWW.Motorvate.ca with pictures.

yes, clean throttle body.
then check battery voltage.

if starter is bad, you should be able to smell/hear grinding noise.

Rebuilding is better unless you want to spend $$$ and get OEM Nissan starter.

The stuff Autozone/Autoparts/Napa/Pepboys carry is made in Taiwan. Be aware! Your OEM is made in Japan, Hitachi product.
I had mine rebuilt, cost $80. If you're in ATL/GA, I can hook you up.

no problem at all, your helpig me out. oh and thanks for the links in bothe threads.

btw, one very important thing I failed to mention, was that I have had a remote control starter, for about 1 and a half years. Could this be the source of my problems?

Re: possible starter problem?

IF the symptoms of not starting are that you get no cranking and
no clicking sound, then the starter solenoid is not moving.
So, either the electrical signal is not getting to the starter,
or the grease is dried up in the starter preventing the solenoid
from moving and completing the circuit to the starter (highly likely).

Try this, next time you have this trouble, open your hood and take
a long tool and rap the starter motor housing a few times. If the
car now starts, the grease is the cause. Pull the starter and clean
and regrease. This worked for me. MOTORVATE.CA has instructions.
Good luck.
